I do have a Gtizo now but, there are times where I just want to shoot without it. I'm definitely looking at the 3531S and it doesn't have a column. I can always add it later.

^Nice setup btw.

Funny thing, I've always been too lazy to bring my tripod where it counts the most, for far-away travel, lol. Well, part of it is because of the hassles of air-travel and the baggage/carry-on restrictions, and I'm already lugging a lot of photo gear with me as it is. I've made good use of improvised "tripods" (any support/stabilizer, basically) instead.

I use the tripod mostly locally, usually for night shooting or product photography, and have brought it with me to camping/hiking.

Hehe, for that setup, first I tried to lower the tripod to the ground as much as I could, but nothing worked. Once I decided to invert it, I was so scared something might snap and my camera would smash on the ground. But everything held up solidly. It was a PITA to make adjustments, but it worked out not too bad. The shots were horrible though, none came out how I hoped for. This is the best I managed:

The macro picked up all the dust in there, I could not focus well in the dark (and with the camera so low; also tried LV and pre-focusing to no avail), and the LED light inside was not even, among other issues.

Remove completely? No. I mean, it can be done but I don't use it with the column removed. I have use it inverted though:

Yeah don't worry about me, I'm more picky and tend to notice mistakes.

It was fine... But you need a mic seeing people talking but not having audio is sorta pointless IMHO. :)

Most of the recorded audio consisted of people talking loudly in the background. It was a private room, but it was open (no door at the entrance of the room), so we also had the noise from the rest of the restaurant. Yes, I really do need an external mic!

I am thinking of (saving up for and) buying either a H1 (external link) or H4n (external link) from Zoom. A friend of mine has the H4n. I'll see how well it performs and how to do all that syncing up the audio with the video.

I wanted to produce a photo that would be the grille of the HDD bay on my computer, lit only by the blue LEDs inside, from the back. It would be kind of like one of those abstract, can-you-guess-what-this-is macro photo. It was actually an idea for the most recent SWMYG contest here at POTN. It failed (and I did not submit it), but I had fun playing around with the setup, lol.

Thanks for your input. I love my Gitzo tripod and it hasn't failed me. There are times when I don't need the center column and it's not removable. I just want the flexibility to do that.

You are welcome! Good luck with your decision/purchase (if you decide to get the 3531S or something else). Your wallet won't appreciate it, but you will! :D
