A friend of mine is looking to buy a very inexpensive telezoom and asked for advice.

I’ve made a list of the most inexpensive telezooms I’ve been able to find, but I have no idea how well (or poorly) they perform, as I have no experience of them.

Canon EF 75-300/4.0-5.6 III
Canon EF-S 55-250 4-5.6 IS
Sigma AF 50-200 F4.0-5.6 DC HSM OS
Sigma AF 55-200/4,0-5,6 DC
Sigma AF 70-300/4.0-5.6 DG MACRO
Tamron AF 55-200MM F/4-5.6 Di II LD Macro
Tamron AF 70-300/4.0-5.6 Di LD Macro

They are all very cheap, but the Canon 55-250 IS and Sigma 50-200 OS are a little bit more expensive then the others, so I would expect them to be a little bit better.

Does anyone have any experience of any of these? Any of these one shouldn’t even touch with a stick? Thanks in advance for any advice.

Get the Canon 70-300mm with IS if you can.

If you can't the 55-250 is good and the Sigma is pretty decent.

The 75 - 300 is a notoriously bad lens (and yes, I owned it at one time). The Canon bang for the buck winner is probably the 55 - 250.

For lowest price, highest value, the 55-250 is going to be hard to beat. Read reviews of all Canon zooms at this site...

Thanks guys :) You've confirmed my first thoughts. The EF-S 55-250 is the only (or at least best) option in that price category. Now I have to convince my friend :)

it is quite a bit more money, but the tamron 18-270 vc is an unbelievably versatile lens. check the thread.

Out of the ones listed I would definately go with the 55-250. The 75-300 will give you a good photo at times, but they are far and few between, I got it and it just sits at home and never gets used, been about 4 years since it was on my camera........guess I'm saying don't even consider it.

+ another for the 55-250. Excellent lens, has IS. Hard to go wrong at this price. You won't be disappointed.

The 55-250 is ok.

The older 70-210 f/3.5-4.5 is supposed to be pretty good too, if you can find one used.

Well, as I said before, it's not for me, it's for a friend :) I gave him the advice to go for the 55-250 IS (anything more expensive than that is absolutely out of the budget), and he would try to save for it.

Thank you all for your comments :)
