What could have caused this?

I always follow the crews that photograph the Space Flight Missions, from the teams in orbit and their Nikons, to the ground crews with their mixed brand bags.

I came across what I thought was an awesome capture (Not mine, below is the link to the pic)...

... And I realized that there is some sort of blur on that thing. Motion Blur? Lens blur?

That is my question to you, aviation photogs. Was this user error -in a way-, or simply a foreseeable product of the circumstances (say "Oh, I would have done much worse if I were on that spot).

Just trying to understand the boundaries between available quality to Opportunity ratio. What do you think? (Remember, first link is the one we're focusing on).

Yes, thats classic motion blur.

What a shame, huh?

And just think, that is the last time that photog will get a a chance to shoot that particular shuttle.

Looks to me as if there's also a little bit of parallax error as well.

The spot at which the wing's leading edge meets the fuselage is a bit sharper than the nose or tail which are moving in slightly different planes in relation to the centroid of the frame. It becomes more noticeable the closer you are to the subject.
