When using Lightroom, which camera calibration profile should I use for working with RAW files from 1D Mark III? I'm a bit confused with this and want to get the best color out of lightroom.

Thanks one and all!

Its a matter of individual preference and taste. I have Neutral set as my default profile and my camera is also set to use the Neutral Picture Style. Of course the picture style doesn't affect the RAW data but it influences the histogram and preview JPEG.

If I really want accurate color I use DPP.

I use a mixture of Adobe Standard and Camera Faithful.

For some reason the camera profile's do a REALLY bad job with some blue-purple flowers I've taken pictures of. They render it as a pink. Adobe standard is my go to for those as it renders the flowers the closest to the original color.

I use "Camera Neutral" 95% of the time.

I've used a Colorchecker Passport to create a custom profile. Quick and easy to do and gives extremely good accuracy.

Question,

I was looking at these a couple weeks ago and they mention using them each shoot for perfect white balance and color. What I was thinking was that I could use it once to get a perfect translation of color provided I set white balance correct. At least that way I know if I get white balance correct my image will be accurate in color without having to mess with multiple profiles. Is this true?

It certainly seems that way, but I really don't know enough to be certain. Perhaps René can explain more?

Yes, I created a custom profile for Lightroom using Adobe's DNG profiler and a colour checker card and this gives the truest colour from what my camera saw with every shot.

I don't bother using the card for each shoot because for one I shoot RAW and so white balance is completely changeable in Lightroom. Also white balance is a matter of taste so using a card for each shoot will give technically accurate white balance but not necessarily visually pleasing white balance.

I use the ColorChecker Passport for custom profiles as well. I don't create a custom profile for everything, but I have created several profiles for different kinds of light, not just necessarily WB... ie sunlight, flourescents, tungsten, compact flourescent, etc...

Here are some samples and comparisons: http://photos.kodanja.net/dng_profile_comp (external link)

Nope. Never gotten around to getting one of these.
For most of the work I use LR for, "accurate" color is a pretty moot point anywway ;)

For a lot of other stuff, I prefer to use DPP. And then I simply shoot a Kodak color card if I need accuracy.
Gets me close enough.
