There was a lot of moisture in the air which caused a bit of haziness, but I was anxious to try out my 7D with my new replacement tripod (the previous one cracked at one of the leg hinges).

The lens used was my Canon 400/5.6 along with both of my tele-extenders (1.4X and 2.0X) to give a FL of 1120 mm at f/16. Shutter speed was 1/80 second and ISO was 100. I used the best seven images out of about fifty total to create a median stack in Photoshop. I also created an edge mask to add a bit of sharpening to the terrain features.

The second image is a 100% crop from the image.

Very nice image, Bill!

Just right on the sharpening IMHO.

I think the sharpening is fine for the full image, but posting at 100% shows a fair amount of artifacts that I'm not a fan of.

Thanks for the generous comment, Don. After I saved the image and it was too late to undo things, I recognized that I went too far in sharpening.

I fully agree. I had a reasonable amount of sharpening applied, but made the mistake of going back and increasing the sharpening "just a little bit more" -- a little bit too much. It would be OK for printing, but for web use, the "crunchy" artifacts around the sharpened edges are much too evident.

Thanks for the compliment, Suzie. It is not all that difficult to do. Luck and dark skies help. I just take it one mistake at a time.
