Gripped 7D users, do you need to have a battery in the camera?

I'm getting the BG-E7 for my 7D. I've ordered an extra battery as well. I know the grips can run with 1 battery. I was wondering, do you need to have a battery in the camera as well? I was hoping to just have no battery in the camera and just alternate the batteries in the grip.

I'm not quite sure I understand the question but with the battery grip on the camera you cannot have a battery in the body itself. To attach the grip you remove the battery door and part of the grip slides up into the body where a battery would normally go.

Remember to keep the battery cover/door handy or in a safe spot. I'm not sure if the 7D OEM grip is the same but my Phottix grip has a slot for the door so you always know it's with the camera

OEM grip has the same spot as well.

Just look at a picture of the grip. There's a piece that sticks up into the battery compartment.

The battery door stores away inside the grip. If it's the same (I guess it probably is, apart from maybe electrical contacts positions?) as the BG2 EN, then it will take 2 batteries plus 4 AA cells as well.

Hope you don't have any locking wheel probs with it if you buy one!

Yes, the grip accepts two batteries, but it still works with only one.

Your statement is misleading...

It's not two batteries and 4 AA cells, but two batteries OR six AA cells (in a separate tray.) And the AA's are pretty much for emergencies only. You'll be lucky to get 100 shots out of set of alkalines...
