I won't be upgrading to a DSLR, so I don't need a angle ironed tripod

Can someone recommend a cheap/decent tripod for this G11?

I see alot on ebay that are dirt cheap.

Thanks ya'll.

I've got a tripod called a Zipshot. Cost: $50. It's manufactured by Tamrac and weighs, I think, 11 ounces. Great for long bike trips that I'm planning on or on hikes where you don't want the weight of an SLR. It's made like the hollow tent poles with elastic through them.

I recently got myself a gorrilapod slr zoom, wich i like a lot. But keep in mind you are going to have to use the timer since it moves a bit when you press the shutter.

Slik has several inexpensive ones that will work well for the G11.

This light tripod's a great match for the G11. Works well for me.

I've used a small leica tabletop tripod and ballhead for years. Works great. Sometimes there's a deal on ebay.
Manfrotto has a tiny platform that takes up no room. It connects to the tripod socket. You can rest the camera on a stable surface and it holds it just fine. Not as dear as the Leica stuff...

Just in case you want to carry less with you.

Another thought...a monopod? Sharpens up my images a lot. You can get one that takes up little space too. My favourite is an old Linhof.

I like the small but useful Ultra-pod II, but for a larger and inexpensive tripod just look in Walmart. They are not as nice as the "real" expensive one's, but they are cheap and can generally do the job. If you want well engineered and more of a professional tripod, then you have to open the wallet and spend the big bucks.

Check out the Sunpack (sp?) at Best Buy. They might have a light weight one that won't cost very much. I had a cheap Velbon tripod for years that worked well and I also had one I got at Target but I don't remember the name. As mentioned in a previous post you might look at Wal-Mart. You don't have to worry about how much the tripod will support so just about any tripod will work just check them out and make sure they are somewhat sturdy.

One thing you do need to be aware of is a light tripod can be blown over easily by a gust of wind and a breeze can also cause lots of vibration. Just pressing the shutter button can cause vibrations if the tripod is not rigid enough so with a very light and cheap tripod it may be best to use the self-timer.

Just remember you pretty much get what you pay for and a cheap tripod will not last as long - the latches may fail prematurely, the legs will bend easier, the pan/tilt heads that come on most of the cheap tripods work pretty well but most likely won't have the smooth action of the more expensive heads. I used cheap tripods for years and for what I paid for the 3 or 4 that I owned I could have bought a decent tripod that would probably still be working.

I've got a lightweight Manfrotto monopod with a very old Leica ball head but would love to find a lightweight but very tall tripod that I can use that same ball head on. I'm 5'11" and with a bad back so it's hard to bend down sometimes and want a tripod that comes up to my face for scenic stuff, as simple and lightweight as possible without getting into the Gitzo expense.

I have a Canon 100 monopod. Inexpensive, and also tall. I'm not certain how you would attach the Leica ball head, but this monopod has it's own ball head.

That is actually a pretty nice tripod that I own. I use it with my SLR and it is more than sturdy enough to use with average sized lenses (11lb weight limit). It would almost be overkill for a G11, but very good and stable for the money.

Glad you found the Leica ball head helpful. I've bought a 2nd one from ebay. They're so well made!

Have you tried a camera with an articulating screen? That's why I traded my G9 for a G11. I love using the camera at waist level. I kept my Sony F828 for exactly that reason. (swivel lens instead of screen.)

I'm very inflexible. The screen on my G11 keeps me from getting down on my knees, or even lower(!) and into a position where I have trouble getting up. (Accumulated knee damage; 2 plates and 14 screws in my good leg)

By the way--thanks for your posts here. I look forward to them for the fine information and knowledge they contain.
