Possible water damage on 70-200 2.8 IS

So we had a storm drain back up flooding the downstairs of our house with 2in of standing water. My gear was sitting on the floor in my backpack. My 50 1.8 was already broke so that's not as much of a worry as my 70-200 2.8 IS. Although the camera bag and case was wet, the lens itself felt dry, but I am afraid of what could have gotten into the lens since it was standing water.

So far the front element is clear and I am already out the deductible for homeowners insurance from the plumber so that is not an issue for claiming it.

I was just wondering if there is anything I should do now to help just in case.

If you're worried about moisture, put it in a large ziplock bag with some rice or a bunch of desiccant packets, that should draw any moisture out of it

Ditto. Keep it in the bag for awhile. Don't use the lens until after you remove it from the rice.

That makes me feel a lot better, especially since it all looks non-fogged and clear. I'll keep it in the bag for a week and see then. I wish my house was as easy as the bag trick!

I wouldn't like that if this would happen ot my 70-200mm..

I wouldn't like it I that happenned to my house!! Hopefully it dries out well and there are no problems (both the lens and the house).

GASP! I feel for ya, dude. My house flooded last summer and it was a nightmare, but I fortunately didn't lose any camera gear. It looks positive that you haven't any fogging, so give the rice, dessicate thing a whirl and let us know how it works out for you. Sorry for your troubles!

I'll let you guys know how it goes, everything is kind of in shambles now, but one step at a time!

I would say that you could probably have the insurance pay for sending it to Canon for a clean/check/calibrate, plus get a new lens case.

One more thing, don't let the lens get cold. If there is any moisture at all there it will condense before the desiccant does it thing. Sorry for your troubles.

Pretty sure that model is very well weather-sealed...It won't block all the water completely but it *will* help. There's a chance no water got in at all. Look at the elements and see if you can find water. Use a flashlight and such and check it out.

Other than that, use the rest of the homeowners insurance to get a new one.

It looks clear to me - so I'm hoping for the best.
