I personally thought Dennis Hopper was a brilliant actor. But did you know he was also a prolific photographer? Apparently he was a little difficult to get along with, so in the early 1960's he turned to photography and art.

If I remember correctly, he shot an album cover for an Ike and Tina Turner album and did lots of other portrait work as well as capturing the culture of the sixties.

And for a mere $1,000 ;) you can buy a book of his photographs (external link).

He will be missed.

RIP Dennis Hopper

He directed "Easy Rider" which was literally the very first independent movie. That one thing alone makes him a legend and he will never be forgotten! IMHO

I was watching news and they played a part of an interview with him at an earlier time. He says he was told by James Dean (who mentored him) that if he wants to direct, he should carry a camera with him at all times to understand composition.

He said he took mostly abstract shots b/c he felt he was invading personal space of people with portraits, but eventually acting groups and such started asking him to take their publicity shots and such and it took off from there. Apparently, he took photos of many people who would also become famous later like Andy Warhol.

There is an exhibit that was planned of his photos before his death, that is coming up.

It's interesting to hear which famous actors and other famous folks are also shutter bugs.
Leonard Nimoy (Spock from Star Trek) is an accomplished and published IIRC photographer of fine art as well.

I've seen Sammy Davis's book as well where he candidly documented the Rat Pack, some good work there.

I hear Brad Pitt is also an avid shutter bug.

I just learned of his death through this thread.....I enjoyed his work from early to later stuff. I will always see him as the photographer with no film in his camera in Apocolypse now.

For memorial day I thought, what the heck. We threw some cheeseburgers on the barbie, had a few brews and watched Easy Rider. First time I had seen it in twenty years or more. Brought back many memories, both good and bad.

But for the first time I really realized that in my younger days I had been thru that territory many times and had never taken a picture. Not a single one. What a loss.

Don't ever pass up the opportunity to take a picture. You may never have the chance again.
