This is the cheapest clone LP-E6 battery and charger (less than 10 USD for both) that works, for anyone who wants a so far reliable (4 complete charges without mishap) clone battery.

http://cgi.ebay.com …&item=320537160249&_rdc=1 (external link)

The battery works in my 5dm2 but it is not recognised as it is not chipped.
The charger also charges the original Canon LP-E6.
The battery is rated at 7.2v 1800mah, which is the same as the original battery.

The bonus is a extremely compact charger, not much bigger than the battery itself. Which is much smaller than the others I have seen.

Clone charger on the left, original on the right.
IMAGE: http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j226/lannes2007/IMG_8581.jpg

The charger has power pins that fold away flat, making storage easy. This doesn't look like a common feature on the clone chargers, the orginal does fold away.

Good instructions and packaging, 6 months warranty if printed material can be believed.

My only knock with that charger is that there are no lights on it so how would you know that the battery is charged other than just waiting a while and then putting it into the camera??

I would not say that the canon charger is that large. I think that I will stick to my Sterling Tek batteries for my 50D camera.

But it's good to know that these are out there and work.

Matt.

The orignal charger is about double the size of the clone charger.
The clone charger has a led that is red when charging and green when fully charged, it's in the bottom right hand corner in the photos.

Not sure that I would take a chance that a $10 battery from a flea market would ruin my $3000 camera. IMO, you get what you pay for.

This is why Canon makes so much from batteries and why they protect this market. When I can get 8 batteries for 1 canon, you know somebody is ripping all of us off. I have two China specials and they work great in the 7D.

You need to realise that making a lithium battery is not easy but it's not expensive either. The Chinese engineers are not stupid and that technology will be just as good. Where do you think Canon batteries are made?

Anyway each to their own, I know I'm way ahead.

Of course there's a big markup for the brand name. However, to me it's an insurance policy. If I have a genuine battery and it leaks and ruins the camera, I have a very good shot at a claim with Canon.

I'm out $3000 if a knock-off fails. Call me crazy, but it's peace of mind.

This is a back up battery to my 2 original LP-E6's and my 6 AA's (grip batteries) only to be used in an emergency, so I don't see it to be much of a problem.

It's not actually a flea market, just a low cost chinese manufacturer, SIDO make a range of battery products for phones, camera's etc. www.sido.com.hk (external link)

By the way the battery is only $5.00

Thats fine if it gives you peace of mind. I have peace of mind using the el'cheapos. Have you ever heard of a SLR failing because of the battery?

Batteries can leak acid, ignite or explode, especially knockoff batteries. I think that would be called failure.

I don't mind using HK parts for lens caps, flash cables, etc., but when it comes to critical components such as batteries, memory cards, etc., why risk your expensive equipment and precious photos on cheap stuff?

all batteries can leak, they don't explode, they may get VERY hot and melt. OEM batteries are just as likely for this to happen to. Remember all those issues with laptops? They were OEM batteries. And yes I know you'll say that for insurance purposes you'll use the canon.

I've used non-oem batteries for 7 years and I'm not about to stop. It's up to the individual to decide.

I reiterate , have you heard of an SLR failing because of the use of a non OEM battery?

These are just three citations for battery explosion. A Google search will turn up dozens more.

I never said they couldn't fail, I said they will overheat to white hot becuase lithium is one of the most reactive molecules around (next to aluminium). Media and people overuse emotive language like explode to make it sound more exciting. None of these is an explosion. Yes batteries are dangerous, I never said they werent, I still don't believe that the no brand names are any worse that the OEM. You even proved my point by posting about the OEM dell batteries failing.

A lot of the failures happen on overcharge, the batteries don't get charged in the camera. I reckon I have got as uch chance as winning the lotto than the batteries melting down in my cameras.
