Yeah but they will overheat, create lots of gas, and if by chance the battery does not have a vent that gas will just build up pressure, and sooner or later the casing will fail and there will be a large release of energy that most would say the battery exploded.

Really though, 3rd party batteries are probably almost as safe as OEM. The only reason I'd say OEM is safer is it is a known quality. Buying 3rd party its very hard to judge quality. But still I wouldn't worry about using 3rd party batteries, hell I use them. You have to be high to pay Canon's prices. I bought a bunch of 3rd party batteries for my T1i @ $3 a piece.

Anyways, if you want to use 3rd party batteries, I would suggest you still use the OEM charger, if you can. Thats one less piece that you need to worry about. You're more likely to damage a battery on the charger than you are in your camera.

I never said they couldn't fail, I said they will overheat to white hot becuase lithium is one of the most reactive molecules around (next to aluminium). Media and people overuse emotive language like explode to make it sound more exciting. None of these is an explosion. Yes batteries are dangerous, I never said they werent, I still don't believe that the no brand names are any worse that the OEM. You even proved my point by posting about the OEM dell batteries failing.

A lot of the failures happen on overcharge, the batteries don't get charged in the camera. I reckon I have got as uch chance as winning the lotto than the batteries melting down in my cameras.

Plus the citations above are 5 years or older.

I agree with you, there are very few recent (in the last year) issues with 3rd party batteries flaking out and damaging canon equipment. The more debatable topic would be their longevity compared to Canon batteries.

At last count, there seemed to be just over 50 lithium ion battery manufacturers, and not all of those do the AA/AAA/.75AA, etc cell manufacturing that is needed for camera batteries. I am unable to get a good count of which of these do small cell manufacturing. The expectation is that within 7 years there will be less than 10 such manufacturers. If anyone has a factory OE BP-511 pack that is no longer operational, pull it apart and see what cells are inside, you should be able to make out the manufacturer of those cells.

I have this exact battery

it lasts MAYBE 35% as long as the canon one.

I got it for free and i never use it after noticing the low battery life

Maybe I have been lucky, but it seems to last as long as the original around 1400 images.

I think he meant, how many recharges.

Personally I've found no difference. I still use the ones I bought for the 350D...

I have 4 clones and 2 chargers for 35 bucks off Ebay.

Over 30 successful charges and they still hold charge. Don't expect to last long, but once they start going, I'm going to pick up those new chipped batteries that are suppose to be similar to OEM.

These batteries don't overcharge btw, the led tells you when they are done.
