Thanks! No magic here. 40D with Tamron 17-50 at 37mm, f/11, 15 seconds.

Learn how? You have pretty much the same gear I do. You need an evening with no haze. Start before dusk so you're set up. You'll get some terrific shots before full dark, too.

Here's how: Steady tripod on solid ground. Middle of your zoom range, manual focus. Eliminate all camera shake with a remote shutter release if you have one. I forgot to bring mine so I used the 2-sec self timer, same result. Manual exposure, middle aperture. Take several shots at different shutter speeds - 2 seconds, 4 seconds, 8 seconds, 15 seconds, 30 seconds... You will see when you're getting close, then you can vary by 1/3 stop. The longer your shutter is open, the silkier the reflection on the water will be.

Ignore the meter in your camera when setting the exposure. It will try to make the picture so bright overall that you will blow out all the detail in the buildings. You are exposing to keep detail in the tiny brightly lit areas, the water will take care of itself.

Post: I used the TLR Pro capture sharpening panel (external link) and TLR landscape sharpener script (external link), FREE from The Light's Right collection of Lightroom, ACR and PS tools.

Have fun!
