I happened to see this on my bedroom wall. I was quite a distance away and the flash seemed to have stunned it a bit. Managed to get it removed.

Any ideas on the type of spider? It was about 5cm long. As it was very late night and I was very sleepy, I had it on the Macro setting and thus the flash was fired and it was on 55mm.

You should post it in the Macro forum, those guys know spiders. :)

If you could use fill flash to lighten up the back, might be able to see more detail. Has the general shape of a brown recluse. :(

Sorry, there's not enough detail and WAY too many spiders of that general shape/colour for me to make an accurate ID.

Hi,
Thanks for all the replies. This was a spider in the UK and thus is luckily not a brown recluse. I sure hope I never see another one like it in my bedroom again, so the chances of a better photo is rather reduced! ;)

In the Macro threads, I have been told that the spider is most likely to be either a sac spider or a woodlouse spider, and as has been pointed out here, the photo quality is not good enough to tell. I have not been able to tell from the photos on the Internet as it has been making me rather itchy and uncomfortable looking at photos of spiders! Sorry.

It has shocked many of my friends who I emailed the photo to as it makes it look even more scary!

Edit:
Sorry, I forgot to mention that the reason it does not look so good is that the lighting in my bedroom is rather dim and thus the flash came on, also it was coming up to midnight when I took the photo; I was not going to try and use the aperture priority, as my main concern was sleep :D

Edit 2:
I also think it is a woodlouse spider, I just did an image search on Google and the second image on Britannica seemed to look the same. They have a painful bite!

Spider in UK with a painful bite???? Oh great :(

And why when it says in the title "Not for arachnophobes" did I still have to have a look.

I wrote that title, just in case there is someone that doesn't like spiders. They can skip this thread without worrying. I guess it's the "Wet Paint" mentality many of us have!

I was going to mention the wet paint as well :D

I don't really mind them that much.
