Arrrghhh...so I bought an FD-mount 50 1.4 with both original caps, B&W filter, and original Canon BS-52 hood for less than half as much as they go for on eBay.

However, I got all excited and checked for fungus, smoothness, scratches, everything...top-notch.

Then I get home and start messing with the aperture ring and the blades are not moving.

Now, the lens is NOT ON A BODY right now. I'm visiting my g/f and my AE-1s are at home. I'm going crazy...the seller (local flea market) was super nice and honest and all his gear was in gorgeous condition. The lens is in pristine condition, so I have a hard time believing it's messed up, but who knows.

Should the aperture blades be going in and out when I turn the aperture ring if the lens is on its own or does it need to be mounted to the body?

I'll be really sad if it's broken :(

Thanks,
Tamas

Just tried my 50mm on my A1 body. The blades do not move.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

Thank you thank you thank you!!! :D You certainly eased my worried brain ;) What tripped me out is I was playing with my Ricoh XR-P Multiprogram and the blades on that one move with the lens off the body...

How do I test my Canon 50? (just to make sure).

I put mine on my A1, had the back cover open with no film, set it to some f/value, and take a 4 second long pic. The blades will close down depending on what aperture you have set.

The aperture only closes down when it's on a body.

So either put it on a body with a long shutter speed or use the depth of field preview to check.

You shut your mouth when you're talking to me!!! ;) j/k <3

Apparently I suck at typing when I'm excited/relieved that I didn't just buy an expensive paperweight.

I'm pretty sure you can push on one of the levers or pins on the back of the lens to move the aperture to test it off of a body.

Stregone is correct. When an FD lens is off the body, one of the pins (the one with a dog leg kink on one edge I think) needs to be locked over, which then allows the aperture blades to move when the aperture ring is turned.

I use an old 50mm 1.8 FD lens with a reversing ring to take macro shots, and use this technique to allow me to adjust the size of the aperture.

If it's an old style (aluminum breech-lock ring) FD, that lever will lock over. If you have a new (all black, with a lens release button on it) FD lens, the lever won't lock over. Canon sold a special accessory to lock the new FD lens aperture control levers over when you used them reversed.

Yeah, I tried monkeying with the levers, but they seemed to do nothing...all my FD lenses are the new style...and I finally got the 50 1.4 on my AE-1P and it works beautifully!!! :D
