I use Godaddy and have used them for three different websites over the last couple of years. So far so good and their prices seem reasonable to me. I am supprised no one else has mentioned them here.....

you are right...but the way I see it (which is different of course I realize that) if people are able to pick up some delicious glass and they are in the 40Ds,50Ds,7Ds, 5Ds, 1Ds, Cam ranges, then whats a $20 a month to them ? You see what I mean...

However, if someone is looking for free hosting. I know a badass website for freebies. No phone support, email will be replied probably when you lose all of your hair on your head,oh and incase you dont login into your control panels once a month, they will delete your site, but still its free.

I understand your thinking, but thats not always going to be the case even if they have a nice camera and glass. Also the way I see it, is if its a great host, I shouldn't have to worry about calling or using their customer service, they should just work and be pretty seamless to me. Which is how Host Gator has been. If I do need them, they are available, but I haven't had a need, which is good news for me.

The only customer service I've used is with my website template company to ask a few questions on how to tweak and customize my template. Host Gator has been up and fully functional since day one, no issues at all, that to me is a great host.

I like what Media Temple has to offer an have known about them for many years since they first started, they market well and have great services too, just a little more than I want to pay for hosting, they are a great option for those who can and are willing to pay a little more.

For my money, Host Gator and a few others like it, in the same price range, are fine for my needs.

Netsonic (external link) - Been with them since 2004. I had originally went with them because of my needs...which was a dedicated server. I had them build a server with their hardware coupled with the Linux distribution and version of my choosing. Going the dedicated server route has proven awesome, and I've been able to do exactly what I need when I need to do it...and I don't have to worry about other users on that machine or monitoring my resources to stay within limits.

It's a bit pricey if all you want is hosting for a single website, however, if you want the whole 9 yards it really can't be beat. For $109/mo I run a dual core 3ghz Intel CPU, 4gb RAM, 160gb HD, and 100mbit net connection. A while back they've also started a program which allows for free yearly upgrades to whatever hardware is current at that time which I used last year to upgrade to the specs listed above from server hardware I was running for about 3 years.

And although I don't charge for the couple friends websites I host on it as well, I could, and I could make back my monthly costs on it if I should choose to. Most of the options listed above either don't allow re-selling of your services or provide no way of doing so.

Their support has also been top notch. I have always had issues resolved in a timely fashion.

See a lot of you guys are talking way over some of these peoples heads, most of the time they are just photographers looking for a web site host, they aren't IT professionals on the side who need/want all this dedicated or fancy stuff.

So thats why I asked the OP their intent with the host and their IT skill level, pretty sure if its something normal, Host Gator, JustHost, BlueDomain, Dream Host etc, will be just enough for them...

ˆˆgreat pointˆˆ

Although, I think all of the options mentioned above have no-brainer hosting options available. This conversation elaborated a bit from the original question, but it's good info for anyone that seeks more.

For images I use smugmug.com. virtually unlimited bandwidth and storage for a very low price. I think you can also host videos. But you cant host html files. Theres a coupon that saves both of us money if you want one. : )

I plan to get a regular web host for html files, but keep smugmug for the image storage. Its easy to get links to images in different sizes so you dont have to resize and upload multiple versions of the same file.

But seriously, we use bluehost.com. They've been pretty good for the past 3 years. Very little downtime and the support people I've talked to are knowledgeable.

I think we've exceeded the amount of information the OP was looking for, there's been no reply.

Word of advice, stay away from 1and1.com and web.com - two worst hosting companies in existence.

.

You obviously have much more IT experience than me (I'm more in development/engineering) but overall I've been happy with 1and1.

I did hit a few snags trying to get Gallery3 installed on my server (was running G2 without any problems), but a few lines in the .htaccess file fixed that. AND I needed to find out the complete filepath to my files on the server, so I called them up on a Friday night and got someone right away that promptly answered my question.

PLUS, their US Headquarters is right down the road from me! (literally, about five minutes from where I am right now  )

Gotta also say I have had as good experience with 1and1 as I have had with a multiple of other hosts in the past - all have their plus and minuses and are subject to tech gremlins.

I have a developer package on 1and1 (for about 6 years at least now) and have about 6 sites on it (used to have over a dozen). I can't complain as they have always been responsive to my questions/problems (dang few).

Their FAQ/Instructions could be a little better. They recently changed/upgraded their webmail, so that is a ton better. Downtime has been very minimal (less than an hour in the last year)

Yeah, 1and1 when it works, it's great. I had a developer account since when it was free for a year - then kept it for another 3 years. They were very good for the price. I moved numerous clients to them in fact.

Then things started happening. Email would go out. Website would go down, etc.. I then had a DNS issue that they couldn't resolve (it was a simple txt file change for most places) but for 1and1, since their support staff don't have the capability of doing anything but the simplest things, they had to escalalate the ticket. It took over a week and a half to get the DNS change made. This meant my client's site was down for that period of time.

I've had this happen again recently, with a client that is still on them.. Took their site down for two days.

Trying to move my domain names that I'd purchased through them, to somewhere else, was a nightmare.

Finally got pissed and started to move everything away from them. This was the biggest ordeal I've ever had to contend with. They got pissy about me leaving, and effectively blocked my transfers away.

I'll never, ever deal with them again if I have my say. Anyways, don't take my word for it, google "1and1" for yourselves and see what you find.

LIke I said, for the price, they offer every bell and whistle available, and when things run smooth, it's great. Just hope that nothing happens, because if it does, you have no recourse, no help, nothing but bald-faced lies.

To me, and my clients, it's not worth it. There are other hosting companies out there that are just as competitive and yet don't hold their clients hostage or treat them like crap.

Todd knows his stuff. I've gone to him on occasion for good advice. I'm now a host gator web hosting reseller, and would love to get folks signed up - I can make some decent deals, as all I need to to now is cover my monthly account cost. Once I get there, I can expand and improve my deals. My goal was not to make money in web hosting, but in web design, and rewrite - moving the accounts to be hosted, and maintained by me. I've got over 10 years in web design, focusing on the presentation layer - my day job is web design and user experience. sorry about the mini hijack, but anyone want to talk web hosting (hostgator is who I'm buying the server space from, so you get the same benefits), send me a pm!
