Here are two pdf files available for download for those who are new to amateur astronomy and thinking of leaping right into astrophotography before even getting their first telescope.

Look before you leap.

First one is an introduction to various astroimaging methods and many of the equipment requirements for each.

Second is a beginners guide to getting a start in DSLR astrophotography of various kinds.

Well done, Tim.

You might consider updating the section on focusing to include the Bahtinov mask. It has revolutionized DSLR astrophotography, and in my opinion it's the only way to focus for deep space. It's as accurate as a knife edge focuser, much less expensive and much easier to use. It beats the Hartmann mask hands down. You should try a Bahtinov mask if you haven't already.

Thanks for the suggestion, I forgot about that one. I've often though about making myself one of those but never got around to it. Maybe if I would get some clear skies at night I might get a little more motovation to do things like that.
I am currently working on another pdf project which will probably include the information from both of those plus much more useful information with a lot of it aim toward the newcomer. I'll make sure to add that into it.
