What happened to the Epson P3000/4000? Does anyone still use these devices any longer? What about the Canon M30/M80 that were supposed to come out a while back?

I have the Epson P3000 and it is awesome. Just last night I downloaded 660 images off of it onto my new laptop. The original images are in my desk top back in NC. I work out of state. The Epson P3000 rocks. The new models are the 5000 and 6000/7000 and B&H sells them of course. The 3000 and 4000 are discontinued older items. Wonderful portable storage. In Alaska three weeks back, I backed up all images on the Epson. Flying home viewing the high quality 4" screen on the plane is nice. But also nice knowing I have two copies of all images. I made a slideshow of images and shared with family back in NC on the Epson. Cool since I was pp the images out of state where I work (where computer is). And the thing is idiot proof easy to use. Couldn't recommend it higher.

Just over at B&H, I see the Epson P-6000 (80 GB) and P-7000 (120 GB) are the new models. That is a ton of storage. I have 40 GB in mine and have shoots from various trips over 2 years back on it. Sweet.

I used to have a P2000 back in the day but I needed money so I had to sell it. I know they improved the copy speeds since then on the P3000 and newer I see they still cost an arm and a leg. I have not heard anything about these in a while so I didn't know if they were still around. I was interested in the Canon models but I hear they were never released in the US.

are they able to copy over/view the HD movie files off a 7D? Doesn't seem like it from the specs. And do they handle the new RAW formats?

If you can read this, you don't need a macro | 7D + 5DIII + Waaaay too much spent....

They can do RAW files but not video. YOu should have a look at the products from Hyperdrive too. They are very popular and are much cheaper for more storage space.

As stated, they handle RAW files for sure. As for video, I have no idea. I would read the specs at B&H.

Check out the Hyperdrive. Also if you're willing to put in a little work you can save lots of money. They charge $250 I think for just the unit with no harddrive installed, but then you can go to newegg or somewhere and buy a 500GB 2.5" SATA drive for $65. You save so much money vs buying one with the hdd pre-installed in the unit.

DANATHEROCK, does your Epson handle RAW files from your 5DMkII?

As for video, the .MOV files recorded by my Powershot D10 were not viewable on my Epson P-5000.

Yes. I just got back from Alaska and had some 600 images on the Epson. Love this thing man. The more I travel and spend time away from home, the more I value it.

With the Epson devices you sacrifice speed, capacity, cash and battery life for the ability to see the embedded jpegs from your raw files on a small low-res (same as that on my 50D) screen. If that's important then splash out the cash on an Epson.

If, however, you want to be able to transfer your images very quickly, have space for over 10,000 images and not worry about being without electricity for a few days - then you should look at sticking a 320GB drive in a Hyperdrive Colorspace.

As for the M30/M80. I actually played with one of these. It was so slow that it made the Epson look like a speed demon. I'm not sure if anybody actually bought one of these. If they did then they're probably still waiting for their first batch of images to transfer.

I have the P-2000 and it's a nice little thing, but once I started shooting large RAW files, it got really slow going to download. I started putting images on m itouch instead, it's cheaper and faster. I think the Epson product has a beautiful screen, but for the price, it's not something better than an ipad now. If I was shooting on site and need to download, I'd use my laptop or netbook. It's so much faster.

If 80 or 120 GB is not enough, I am lost. This is a back up device. Additionally, the 50D (I own as well) doesn't look anything like the Epson P-3000. The Epson has a super high quality 4" lcd that makes viewing images a joy.

Some specs below for anyone interested....
