I've just installed the UnDutchables 0.2.3 hack. My primary motivation for doing so was to enable the FEC (flash exposure compensation, for the benefit of those searching the forum) feature. This may sound a boneheaded, but I don't think it's working. I've tried shooting identical shots in manual mode with three different FEC settings -- -2, 0 and +2 -- and the shots are identical, both visually and per the histogram.

I've also tried this with both the built-in flash and my 420EX.

Am I missing something?

Jens

Just to make sure i fired of 3 shots w/ 300D at -2 0 +2 and works on mine. Just curious are you using the Jump button to access the FEC??? Did you set the Flash sync to fixed (1/200 sec)???

Thanks for your reply. I am using the Jump button to access the FEC. Flash Sync in AV Mode (menu 3) is set to 0:Auto.

Hi, in Av mode flash is just used as fill in light, put the camera on manual (1/200 and try say f8) and try again with the 3 FEC settings :)

Set flash Cf to fix and it will lock in the shutter to 1/200 sec. If you leae it auto thein camera meter will meter normally.

lostdoggy, the only reference to Flash Cf setting I find appears to be for Av mode only (Cfn. Menu 3). I was looking to use FEC in manual mode as I don't even use Av mode, most of the time. Am I looking in the wrong place (ie, is it not Cfn Menu 3 where I should be setting Cf to fix and 1/200?

Hey, all. I got it working. Problem is I'm still not sure what I was doing wrong. I think the biggest problem is I was expecting too much -- but I found some examples on the web of the same shot at FEC -2, 0 and +2 and was able to achieve similar results.

Anyway, thanks for the suggestions. This is a great forum, and I hope I have something to contribute down the road.

I just tried to install the un-dutchables 300D hack to my 64MB CF card through my card reader and then installed the CF card in my 300D and turned the camera on and got nothing. Did I not format the card or something?

Every website I see states that the camera should begin to read the new firmware instantly and all I'll need to do is follow the directions on the LCD.

I'm almost too afraid to screw up my 300D but thought I'd give intalling the hack a chance after working up the nerve.

Any suggestions? Is it really worth it?

I love the hack on my 300D, I used a 64mb card, copied it over on a card reader, and the camera did the rest.

Did you format the card first? Put the card in the reader, use windows to do a quick format, copy over the hacked firmware (file name is E3kr111.FIR) pop the card into the camera, and start it up. Works perfect on mine.

It won't work like that. Install the firmware using Canon's utility and then power off the camera, remove the CF card for a sec then power it on. the update screen will pop up.

Funny, I dont use any of Canon's Software to install the firmware...

Direct from Canons site...

Two methods of copying the downloaded firmware file are provided.

If you have a CF card reader or a PC card reader*, or a notebook type personal computer with a PC card slot*, please copy the firmware file included in the downloaded data a freshly formatted CF card.
    * If you use a CF card with a PC card reader or a PC card slot, a PC card adapter is necessary.
  1. If you do not have any of the above equipment, please connect the camera and a personal computer with a USB cable*, and copy the firmware file onto the CF card in the camera. For copying, "UploadFirmware**" (utility software) is included in the downloaded data.
    * For USB connection, the interface cable IFC-300PCU enclosed with the camera is necessary.
** Macintosh version of UploadFirmware requires Mac OS 9.0 to 9.2.

Well it's not working for him, I offered an alternative. One that works for me.
