I'm about to sell my tokina 11-16mm.
I don't use this lens that much, but when I need it, it always produces stunning images.

I'm about to sell this lens for buying the 17-40 afterwards.

I think I'll use the 17-40 more often, but when I need something wider, I don't have it off course :-).

What do you guys think?

I'm also going to change to FF when the 5D3 comes out. I know about the rumors, but I think the wait is worth it (did the same with the 70-200mm).

If you're on FF, then get the 17-40. Otherwise, I don't think you need to worry about that before.
But if you're really after the 17-40, then do what you think is right. There's no right/wrong answer. I'm just happy with my Tok 11-16 for now....till the 5D3 :)

Since the 17-40 is f/4 anyways, why don't you just switch to the Canon 10-22? I know you said you want to switch to full frame when the 5d3 comes out but that could be a very long time and lenses tend to hold their value. I think the 10-22 might compliment your lineup better. I just don't see much advantage to getting the 17-40 in this case.

Do you really think, being honest with yourself, that you will actually be willing to double the cost of the digital body, in going from APS-C to FF? If you struggle with that cost hurdle, be more realistic with yourself and buy the Canon 17-55 or the Tamron 17-50. Go to DPReview.com and read the MTF values provided by each lens, and understand that the FF coverage 17-40 does not have the same performance as the lenses designed to cover the smaller APS-C format.

I'm very happy with mine too, but most of the time it's to wide.
But when I need the wide angle, I'm glad I have the tokina :-).
It's difficult!

That could be a solution, but if I switch, I'm going for the 17-40mm.
And for the very wide angle, the tokina suffice

I'm into portraiture and I want to take advantage of the FF sensor for that. It'll fit me more.

For the moment, I'm investing in buying glass before I want to upgrade to FF and by the time the 5D3 arrives, I want to have a good lens line-up to start with FF.

So in the coming year my tokina and sigma 30mm has to go for a 17-40 and the 35L.

I'd keep the 11-16 now, and sell it when/if you move to FF. Those things keep their value pretty well.
Otherwise maybe a Tokina 12-24 F4 if 16mm at the long end is too wide?

you have no clue when the 5D3 is coming out...could be years...i'd buy for what you have now...maybe switch the tokina for one of the 10-20/22mm this way you have more coverage...but i think that pairs better than the 17-40mm with your 24-105mm

This would have been my suggestion too, if the 11-16 is too wide. The additional range is very useful, and it would pair well with your existing lenses, better perhaps than the 17-40. When you eventually go full-frame, you'll easily be able to sell it.

What aspect of FF seems, to you, to be why there are advantages to useing FF for portraiture? Is it shallower DOF, or something else?

I would say keep the 11-16 at least until you go FF, but did you know many have used the 11-16 on a FF at approx 14-16mm? http://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/695896/0 (external link)

I know it can be used on FF, but that will be to wide for me.

On the wide side the 17-40 will be the same as the 11-16, but there's more reach at the long side. I know I have the 24-105, but sometimes I need the wide side, so then I'll have it.
