I am in search of my first CPl and have been doing a ton of research. I realize that a CPl will be a major part of my photo arsenal so I want a good filter to do the job. After going back and forth and ready to get a Hoya 58mm pro-1 , I came across the Marumi brand which seems to have received some good reviews for a good price.Has anyone used this filter brand? If so, how does it compare to any other you may have used before? it seemed to get good reviews and was "up there" in a side by side comparison of B+W. Granted a distant 2nd, but nonetheless it was ahead of Hoya and other brands.

I have a Marumi Super DHG CPL. The build quality is excellent, the filter itself performs great also.

I took this shot with a 11-16 tokina with the CPL. Straight from camera, no post work done at all.

Lighting conditions weren't the best but meh :)

How is the build quality of this filter? Metal threads? Plastic? Not much seems to be known of this manufacturer.

It's metal. Not sure why type though.

The build quality is excellent and is on par with other hoya/ B+W filters i own previously.

To sum that up.. The Marumi Super DHG was ranked #1 in the review against 24 other CPL by major companies.

Awesome. This is just what I was wanting to hear and read. Thanks for the help. They sound like a great intro CPL that won't break the bank yet give me good results. I might have to go with Marumi over the Hoya!

No, B+W was also ranked #1. Not sure why they had/have two #1's.

B+W Slim KSM C-POL MRC 72 mm
Overall ranking: 1st place
Econo-ranking: 7th place

Marumi DHG Super Circular P.L.D 72 mm
Overall ranking: 1st place
Econo-ranking: 3rd place

Man, Hoya's are ranked pretty bad.

noticed that test didnt use Hoya's HD line. btw, what is the B+W EW CPL at the bottom? I see the Kaesemans and non-, but don't know what the "EW" refers to.

If you can read this, you don't need a macro | 7D + 5DIII + Waaaay too much spent....

B+W Slim KSM C-POL MRC 72 mm
Overall ranking: 1st place
Econo-ranking: 7th place

Marumi DHG Super Circular P.L.D 72 mm
Overall ranking: 1st place
Econo-ranking: 3rd place

Man, Hoya's are ranked pretty bad.

The B&W was disqualified for being a linear polarizer being sold as a circular polarizer. Quote from the summary of the Lens Tip review:

"B+W EW KSM C-POL MRC 72 mm filter got the most points and… was disqualified. It’s hard to say why a polarizer tagged with letters “c-pol” on the ring, and “circular-pol” on the box turned out to be linear. Perhaps it wouldn’t be so shocking if it hadn’t been for the fact that it was manufactured by an acknowledged company with a good reputation. Additionally it’s the most expensive in the field. Shame and scandal.

After such blunder we have mixed feeling about the first place won by the same manufacturer (B+W Slim KSM C-POL MRC 72 mm). Still, it’s hard to raise objections to it. Optical quality doesn’t arouse caution, antihalation layers work magnificently, filter is well-built of good quality materials. It was possible to reach a compromise between extinction coefficient and total light transmission. Unfortunately, this filter belongs to the group of the most expensive ones in the field and I guess that is its main shortcoming (at least in the amateur market, where price is significant). "

the Hoya HD are in the supplement, tested several months later with other additional CP filters. The Hoya HD came in 6th overall.

Does that mean all B+W kaesseman is linear? Or only the one in the test? I'm no expert in filters so I don't really know about it.

I have never heard of Marumi. Anyone know where they are made?

All I know about Marumi is that they did a large test of circular polarizers a while back:D

No, it merely shows that B+W production QA was insufficient to catch an error in production, and they got caught. Distressing error, in view of the high price that their filters command.
