Long story short, purchased a BN camera at EBAY. I received an e-mail from Square Trade offering their extended warranty for $172.89. Are they reliable? how's their customer service?

Thanks

Read their fine print carefully. I purchased it once and never had to use it. Read the fine print carefully on a second purchase and decided against it. It sounded like there were way too many situations where you wouldn't be covered.

Sounds like a pretty pricey warranty which is a major profit center for those types of sales. Do you feel the need for such coverage based on your usage? Sorry, don't honestly know anything about that vendor.

Honestly? No, I mean I take good care of my equipment and Im not a pro so none of my cameras were abused. Only reason why I even brought this question is because Canon only offers a year worth of their warranty. After 2-3 years, some electronical failure may occur and spending an extra $170.00 I guess is not that bad considering the amount I paid for the item.

I was recommended to get Personal Articles Policy with my home/renters insurance on this board, in lieu of an extended warranty. Never had to use it, but it made me feel better...

Do you get three years of coverage then for $170?

I just have a personal problem with extended warranties - and I realize that's my issue - typically most of them never get used, it's gravy for the company selling them, and that's why you see so many of them marketted.

I have a 5D I bought new in 2006 that I use for weddings, hiking, misc..... knock on wood it's been fine so far. I am careful with it, but don't wrap it in velvet either. - Stu

Just to make you guys laugh....I run a company that sells them (not electronics related but still an extended service plan) and we pay $30 for an extended warranty that costs the consumers $300 and covers $3000 in goods. It really is a profit maker!! I even spiff my salespeople for everyone they sell. But, I have consumers who have had to use it and saved a ton of money! Its all about the odds.....If you are a gambler then let the dice roll...if not then sleep better knowing you are covered.

The price for square trades warranty is kinda high...google for coupon codes for 20-40% off the price. And, if you are going to get it I would pick up the accidental damage protection also. This is especially good if you travel and bring your expensive gear with you. imho

Canon 5d Mark II, 24-105L f/4 IS, 50mm 1.8 II, 430 ex II,17" Alienware M17x laptop for photo processing and more...yes, its overkill but I love it!

Very interesting background info there Lightmaster - thanks for sharing. It's not often you hear the scoop from somebody actually on the inside ;). I didn't know you could get coupons for these things either.

Extended warranties are a scam. Obviously the vendor makes lots of money at that price, or you wouldn't get one at that price. That means the vendor knows the vast majority of cameras will never need the service.

You are betting against the house. Surely you know that is never a good bet.
