but i was bored... i was playing around with my filters and seeing... let's see... let's screw a B+W UV filter onto my Hoya CPL...

and then my face started turning red as i tried and tried to unscrew the sucker...

after 30 mins of unsucessful attempts... i found myself in Chef Central looking for jar openers...
i purchased 2 of these... (external link)

works like a charm for $6.99...

the opener actually fits total of 8 sizes and the wider side of the biggest opening fits 77mm filters amazingly... and even with the rotating portion of the CPL, it held it and opened the filter very easily.

did not try any other sized filters but i'm sure if it can hold, it will open.

maybe i'll just cut 2~3" off the end of this to make it a bit more portable...

oh, and comes in black, red, green and blue...

I assume you would want the RED one if you are using "L" lenses?

I hear that "strap wrenches" work well on filters (a small version of a oil-filter strap) to provide even pressure around the filter unlike your fingers which slightly distort it. Also, pressing down on the front edge (on rubber surface) while rotating lens may work. If it isn't too stuck, simply putting a thick rubber band around the filter and lightly gripping it while unscrewing might work.

+1 on the filter wrenches, much easier to pack than the jar opener.

I had a problem with a jammed rubber hood on a filter. No matter how I tried they would not unscrew. The rubber hood had a plastic thread, the filter was metal. So I put them in the freezer for 1/2 an hour. Bingo!!! They just came apart, no problem at all. Just let them warm up at room temperature for a couple of hours before using them again.

I carry a thick rubber band in my bag. Small to pack and always works for me.

The thick rubber band works for me too. It's primary use is to keep the lens cap on my fisheye, but it gets called into secondary service on stuck filters :)

You need to be really careful to not squeeze the ring too much when they're stuck because the ring deforms making the filter much harder to remove. :)
