I just got the T2i for better low light performance than my XS. My T2i seems to produce good shots at ISO 3200, but is a bit too noisy at 6400.
I was surprised to read in Pop Photo reviews that the T1i does better at high ISO than the T2i.
Does this seem accurate to anyone here? Is there anyone who "upgraded" from the T1i to the T2i? I assumed that T1i performance at high ISO would be similar to that of the 50D, and not as good as the newer T2i.
I wonder if I wasted the extra money spent on the T2i.
I like the camera, but questioned the reviews.

i can't compare directly but the T1i is definitely fairly noisy above 1600. albeit my comparison is the 5dmk2 which is very usable at 3200 and 6400.

this was taken on my 500D at 6400 in very low light and is also pretty underexposed. it is barely usable even as a snap, but i will keep it. it would 100% have been a throwaway if the background had not been snow.

there's no use in taking an image that was underexposed and possibly misfocused. that being said the t1i has ISO performance like a 50d, and the t2i like a 7d. the t2i is definitely the better performer. the caveat is that if you aren't exposing correctly ISO 3200 won'y look any good on either one.

Do you have the pop photo reviews article link comparing the two? I looked there and couldn't find it.

Despite its lower pixel count, images from the Canon EOS 500D are slightly noisier when compared directly against the 550D, but we certainly can't say that the newer model offers any significant improvement - except of course for the larger files.

I didn't see anywhere in that review where it says the T1i is better at high ISO.

There was no direct comparison, but the new review of the T2i said that it was excessively noisy at 3200. The T1i got a low noise rating at that ISO. My copy of the T2i seems about as good at 3200 as my XS at 1600, which is fine from my perspective.
There wasn't a direct comparison, but the noise ratings of the T2i were lower than the T1i in the latest issue. That puzzled me.

It says generally that the 550D (T2i) has lower noise than the 500d (T1i), I never said the T1i has lower noise. The op asked the question about noise comparisons between the cameras. Dpreview counteracts what was said in the pop photography article.

Yes, which is why I wonder if the dpreview article is different than the supposed pop photo review about which the OP stated:

well come on then, where is your photo? it may be a worst case but at least it gives OP some actual information, rather than a subjective opinion using "too much noise" as a yardstick. i am getting rather tired of the "post police" on this forum i have to say.
