I'd like an opinion from those who upgraded. Is it worth it?

I have a 5D. I'd like to upgrade if I gain more than I give up FOR ASPECTS I CARE ABOUT.

Rating link here (external link). According to them, 5D and 5Dii are neck and neck except 5D has greater color sensitivity (whatever that means). Their overall rating shows 5Dii a significant upgrade.

  • Don't care (not even a little) about video.
  • Bigger buffer size would be nice but it's manageable. Don't care.
  • Better high ISO performance, do care but is there any?
  • above ISO 3200 support, don't care.
  • Less noise, do care but is it? Is it a downgrade?
  • 3.9 fps vs. 3.0 fps - don't care.
  • Better weather seal, do care.
  • Better AF + AF features (like face recognition), do care.
  • 21MP vs. 12MP, frankly I prefer 12.
  • Smaller pixel size on 5Dii worries me.
  • Extra cost of upgrade - don't care much. I just want the camera that suits me best.
I shoot events and portraits, but also landscapes and other stuff.

I have a 7D that I'll keep. I'm covered on video or sports AF needs. The 5D is strictly about Image Quality and the FF FOV.

Opinions? Thanks much.

I have both camera's and I like both. The mark II does win at higher ISO, but the 5DI really isn't bad.

Don't forget the 5DII also has liveview (which can be handy at times) and a wayyy better LCD screen.
If you don't really care about those things either, I would say you'll be perfectly happy with a 5DI.

Win at higher ISO performance? IE: ISO 1600 and 3200 more usable on the 5Dii?

What about the dark (under exposed) areas?

I have a 5d and have had a chance to shoot with my friend's 5DII and I think I can clear out some of the question for you:
* video - I do not know about
* Bigger buffer size - do not know about
* Better high ISO performance - This is true, very true. I tried my 5D (which I'm proud of for ISO) and its no match for the 5D II. The 5D II is probably one of the best ISO performer you can buy right now.
* above ISO 3200 support - ???
* Less noise - This is the same as better ISO performance, isn't it?
* 3.9 fps vs. 3.0 fps - I don't know either.
* Better weather seal - I"m not sure about
* Better AF + AF features (like face recognition) - I don't think the AF is better in term of still photography.
* 21MP vs. 12MP - Actually I find 21MP is very nice, you can really crop a lot and still be good.
* Smaller pixel size on 5Dii shows the very small details and things that 5D can never sees
* Extra cost of upgrade - its up to you to decide.

Have fun

I would say the 5DII has at least one stop advantage over the 5DI.

You also have a 7D, don't know if you've ever tried the 5D?
A 5DI feels... 'old'.
You just feel it's a camera that has been on the market for quite some years now. Not that it doesn't perform nice, but just the handling/feeling.

Some may not like that.

My rule of thumb is I don't want to upgrade just one notch. For example, I didn't run out and trade in my 40D when the 50D came out, but I might give the 60D a look if it turns out to be real. So if I had a 5D, I would wait for the 5DIII.

YMMV of course.

My usual thinking too, but if it's truly a 1 stop advantage it's just too hard to ignore for another 2 years. I actually already ordered the 5Dii then got buyers remorse when I looked at those charts (linked in OP).

I could think of a lot of upgrades I'd like in 5D but when it comes down to it, IQ and low-light performance (whether it be AF or IQ) is all that really matters to me - unless the make it an underwater camera or something.

Or, if they create a 2nd PRINT button I'm IN!:p

I have both. 5D and 7D. Keeping the 7D, it's wonderful.

Had a 5D, have a 5DII.

Bigger LCD... usefull when looking at histogram and image at the same time for blinkies...I do appreciate that. Eyes are not what they used to be.

Micro Adjustment. One or two of my lesnes benefited from it.

More pixels. I have room to crop.

More detail... for LARGE prints.

Better high ISO (the reason I upgraded). Surely 1 stop better.

Liveview..... great for macros and deliberate focusing for still life. Also a quick way to get MLU.

Other than that I can't think of anything that I have and do use.

Bohdan - I may be, and probably am, completely wrong.

I had a 5D and upgraded to a 5D2. The high ISO is definitely at least a full stop better. The LCD is higher resolution which is very nice for looking both at the images and the histograms/info. I'm not sure the AF is any better. They're pretty close if memory serves.

Thank you; buyer's remorse gone!

If it's a stop better on ISO - that was my initial draw and the rest will be gravy. It'll probably depreciate faster than the 5D between now and when 5Diii is released but for a full stop, it's money well spent.

Anyone need a 5D with grip? It'll be on the buy-sell board in a week or so - after my 5Dii arrives.

Either I have a really good 5Dc or a really bad 5D2 but I'm not seeing a full stop in ISO performance between the two. I think the 5D2 is a little better but not nearly a full stop, at least with the two I'm comparing.
