I just got these programs with my T1i last week. I've been concentrating on the camera, and now I'm going to start learning the software.

The problem I've had is that Dpp and Picture Style Editor won't run unless I set my windows Vista Color depth to 16bit. If I try to start either program while running my computer normally, I get the error window, "this program requires a display capable of 1024x768 resolution or more (screen area) and High Color or higher
settings." Since my display is set at 1600x900 (LG 21" LCD monitor) and Highest (32bit) color, this shouldn't be a problem.

I contacted Canon Support, they're the one who told me to set my display to 16 bit. When I asked if this was a bug and when would it be fixed, I got the following response:

There aren't any bugs regarding this particular issue. The software will not install or run if the screen resolution is not properly set. This will make all of the software compatible with Vista.

BTW, I've updated all the programs with the latest updates from Canon, hoping that would solve the problem, before I contacted Canon support.

Any of you have to do this? Isn't lowering the color depth going to affect the quality of the pictures being edited?

Thanks for any insight;
Scott

No, it effects only the way they are displayed on your specific monitor. There will be absolutely no effect on the image file itself. Going from 32 ( which is probably really 24 bit - 8 bits per channel + 8 bits of non-color data) to 16 bits (5/6/5 bits per channel) you probably won't see much difference.

I haven't seen this -- I have the software on my desktop as well as my laptop and both are full 32 bit displays. You might try up your display resolution settings a notch -- even though your res does meed the expectation, maybe messing with it a bit will give some clue. I really doubt that it's your bit depth.

First, thank you for your replies,

According to Canon, "This will make all the software compatible with Vista." Also, "The message you are receiving is related to the LCD monitors screen resolutions."

So, this leads me to believe that if you are running Vista on an LCD monitor, you've got to set your display to 16bit.

I'm sure that there must be more than a few people on this forum running Vista on an LCD monitor!?

I agree. I don't see the connection between resolution and bit depth.

The error message mentions both resolution and color depth, Canon Support said to just change the display to 16bit color depth, nothing about resolution. That does work.

Does anyone have this problem (requirement?) with Windows 7?

So, are you saying that changing the bit depth to 16 does in fact work? Well, good that you got it running, but I'd say not so good if in fact that's what you have to do.

I have Win7 64 bit on my laptop and no such issues.

Yes, Canon was right, just by changing the color depth to 16bit, did the trick. But, like you said, it's a PITA. Vista has been out for quite a while, and so has LCD monitors, they can't fix this?
