I have CS4 installed and use it to edit pics. You do lose a good part of the screen in the raw editor.. making it impossible to use the clarity slider and anything under it.

Thanks for all the responses. It looks like IrfanView and Picassa are the 2 smallest packages I could use. I will look into both. Are they both non-destructive? Will I simply be able to load the CR2 files into my LR library when I return to my desktop?

It will refuse to run when it sees the screen is too small. At least that's the way the last version was--the current version may have corrected that. it hasn't, however, with the asus netbook, the video can be configured to larger than the physical screen size (which will satisfy DPP & Lightroom), and when your mouse approaches the edge of the visible screen, it will pan over (screen on my netbook isn't that big)

It doesn't support the 1D3 or any cameras newer than that. It does support the 5D, but I don't recall which models between those two it does support. Also it seems to lock onto the directory, which is aggravating if you want to remove the device your photos are stored on. Jon

I shoot RAW on a 5D II and use Lightroom on a Mac for processing. As a result, I know little about other RAW conversion programs. I am wondering what software I should use in order to be able to view the RAW files on the netbook. I am really not interested in processing them as I doubt the machine has the power to do it, but I would like to be able to review photos at the end of the day. It needs to be relatively lightweight in order to not bog down the mini processor! I welcome all netbook software suggestions, thank you very much. What operating system on the netbook? kskitt wrote in post #10295648 There is a windows download that i use that allows you to view them normally in windows exlporer - http://www.microsoft.com …66FD4A3286&displaylang=en Jon wrote in post #10295868 That hasn't been updated to support Canon's newer cameras. I have this installed in my Win XP desktop and I can't see the RAWs of my 40D files in Windows Explorer. I can, however, see the 40D RAW files in Windows Explorer on my Vista laptop after installing the Canon RAW Codec. LINK John

Jun 04, 2010 05:03 | #26 Assuming that you're happy viewing the embedded jpeg (and I find it perfectly OK for showing people my images and for culling obvious duds) then Irfanview and Faststone should be the ones you're looking at. Processing raws on a netbook is no fun at all and something I try to avoid at all costs. If I switch Faststone to display the actual raw data then it takes around 25 seconds just to open and render the image. Embedded jpegs are a lot faster. Frank Hollis - Retired mass spectroscopist

I have downloaded IrfanView and successfully uploaded and viewed CR2 files from the 5DII. I am unsure what Fastone adds to this functionality. What does it do that complements the IrfanView software? Thanks again.

They pretty much cover the same sort of ground and they both do it very well. So you only really need one of them. It's all down to personal preference. Frank Hollis - Retired mass spectroscopist
