I'm a bit surprised actually at how much worse the 5DmkII is over the 1DmkIV... from other reviews I've seen i thought it would be the opposite.

It's not really all that different actually.

In the real world, you would eliminate color noise, which in this case wouldn't be too difficult to do for either camera. So what you have left would be 2 images with lots of grain. If you look beyond the color noise, you'll see they aren't that far apart.

You will also have to take into account that the 5DMKII, while taken at the same settings, is in fact underexposed relative to the MKIV shot, which will bring out more apparent noise.

But again, the difference is nothing to write home about.

Stealth, I hope you don't mind.
Here's the version with the color noise removed.

You can still see that the MKIV still has the advantage, but this could be due to a number of factors including exposure differences between the 2 cameras, the fact that the area is more OOF on the 5DMKII than the MKIV due to differences in DOF I presume which will bring about more apparent noise, etc...

Damn, I'm jealous as hell at the high ISO performance of both cameras

Must resist urge to keep spending....

This is the second comparison I've seen and in both cases the 1d seems better. Is it improved sensor design and fewer pixels? The sensor in the 5d is bigger so I had assumed the 5d would have been better.

One last comment, which has probably already been made...

It looks like the 5D2, at the same settings as the 1D4, is exposing slightly darker. Maybe 1/3 of a stop, maybe a little less.

I know I'm asking a lot, but would it be possible to compare the two, but with the 5D2 exposed 1/3 of a stop higher than the 1D4? I think that this would give a more realistic indication of how it performs in terms of noise only.

Although it is interesting to note the slight difference in exposure. I had a similar situation when I was comparing the 5D2 to the 5D classic - the original 5D's sensor is a full 1/3 of a stop more sensitive than that of the 5D2 and other newer bodies and I found myself compensating for this fact in my exposure settings in order to compare the noise characteristics of the 5D, 5D2, and 7D.

in the images of the hat the 5DII has much more detail than the other but just in the micro contest of the hat.

Looks to me like one stop better noise control in the newer camera? 3200 = 6400 and 6400 = 12800. I'd not get too picky about the minor focus and exposure differences.

Is that one stop improvement apparent at low ISO levels?

I'm not meaning to be picky, but exposure differences do have an influence over noise. I guess I'm trying to split hairs here - it's clear that the 1D4 is cleaner, but how much cleaner can't quite be determined without taking the exposure difference out of the equation.

Maybe I'm just trying to delay the inevitable 1D4 purchase. :)

No problem and you're totally right.

Again, this test is a same shutter speed + aperture + iso test. If you shoot to the right and pull it down the 5Dii does a lot better... But so would the 1Div ;)

overall they're both great, but under the exact same settings the 1Div does better, with "adjusted" settings the 5Dii is just as good.

The advantage of the 5Dii remains. More detail and resolution (if you need it for say, landscapes) and a shallower DOF (which isn't an advantage for sports/macro, but is great for portraits etc.

Also the DOF is narrower on the 5Dii (as you said) so I missed focus a few times

Why not properly expose both images, as you would in real life.. and then compare the two?

I am currently doing another test. This time I adjusted the shutter till it indicated that the exposure was in the middle of the meter.

Funny thing is the settings ended out being the same...

Will post results soon.

OK I added a new comparison to the top.

Whole images posted here, 100% crops are back in the OP.

This is JMHO but I think the 5DII still seems slightly worse. In as much the noise seems to "Band" more.

That said, the main difference is at 12800, to an area I personally venture into much. ;)
