LOL. 2 stars for optical quality... about time somebody figured out that the lens sucks. I mean, we have only been shooting with it and getting stellar results for what, two years now?

"The amount of vignetting is quite heavy at f/1.4 but that's rather typical for such lenses." Quite heavy... and yet the least of any f1.4 lens on FF.

I really have to wonder about those edge results (field curvature?) because there is no way that the Sigma 50 is worse on FF than the Sigma 30 on crop, in fact it is significantly better (as someone who mainly shoots f1.4, with subjects all over the frame)

Wow, the border quality is atrocious. They must have gotten a bad lens? Or it would be crazy that no one noticed the huge dropoff into the corners (seems very unlikely). That aside, I never really liked the look of the specular lights from this lens, it looks smudged and the Onion Ring effect gives it a dirty look.

Considering they gave the 50mm 1.2L a 2 star rating as well I think I can live with my purchase.

they must be on crack imho to give this lens a 2 star in optical quality. Sometimes I think the ones doing these reviews are 70 year olds still in love with there gear from the 80's, lol.

Thats the last time i trust that site for a lens review.

Light Rules is a solid review site. I find a lot of the review sites out there have strong biases making some lenses better or worse then they really are.

dpreview is ok too for reviews from time to time.

Wow that is surprising. I'm actually switching from the 30 to the 50... seemed like general consensus was the 50 was even better than the 30... .guess i'll find out tomorrow! :)

I like how they go completely out of their way to compare its bokeh against another lens. They've gone out of their way to criticize the bokeh of both the 50L and now the Sigma...but have no comment on the 85L's chopped bokeh. It's almost as if they wanted to knock them down from the start.

And they forgot to mention that it has the best vignetting performance of all EOS-compatible ultra-fast 50's

Photozone is now off my list of reference websites. It's even worse than TDP...at least you know that guy's biases.

I've been reading reviews on both Photozone and The Digital Picture for a few years now and am starting to think both sites are funded by Canon and Nikon.

Their persistent negative reviews of Sigma lenses that most everyday users find great only hurts their reputations.

You actually own this lens and you're going to allow this review to put you off? So all the pictures you took with it, and were satisfied with, now suck as a result?

I saw this review before I bought the 50 and didn't pay much attention to it, due to, as pointed out here, the many reviews for lenses on that site that fly in the face of actual user experience and other reviews available. I just think it's because they like to be a bit controversial and buck the trend.

They may well have had a bad copy, like TDP apparently did, but I don't think it's good enough to publish a review under those circumstances.

In my experience the Siggy 50 is a great lens, worthy of 4-star IQ at least.

I think your sarcasm detector could use some calibration.
