Okay so this is one of the very first shots I took from stepping up to a DSLR so I'm open to any and all criticism, thanks!

errrrrrr... well... I think if it were me, I'd shoot more and different things. The detail you captured in the rocks is great, but the crop of this image is way too wide. trim it down to the edges of the pot and plant and have none of the dest ot table top in the frame. That might help it. Otherwise it really isn't that interesting of an image.

Taking images to get used to your new camera is a very important part of learning it, but not every image taken with a dslr is better than if you had taken it with a P&S. This image could have easily been taken with a P&S and looked the same.

Keep shooting and trying though. BTW, what camera did you get?

Read the manual back to front! Focus and composition will be your first details.then go from there.
