Hello people,

I've searching for a good tripod to substitute my old Velbon and I've been around the forum reading about the diferent types and brans of tripods.

As weight is not a problem to me, I'm thinking to spend a few dolars ( 145.00 USD) in a " SLIK Pro 500 DX " tripod, with a SH-505 Pan head.

I would like to have some comments about my " choice " for those who own a SLIK 500 DX.

It will be used mainly with a CANON 20D + Grip and a 70-200mm L with a 2x TC from Kenko.

Thanks in advance for your kind attention and help.

Best regards

Any half-way decent tripod will hold that gear easily, it's the head you have to worry about. If it were me, and it is, I'd look for something along the lines of Dolica Proline Carbon Fiber (external link). They make great tripods, and their ball heads are pretty strong. The one I have can hold a gripped body and Sigma 150-500mm OS, which amounts to a bit more weight than what you want to put on top of it.

In my experience, it's better to have a ball head instead of a three-way pan head. You can't always get that precise motion you want in a pan head as you can with a good ball head. But I'm sure others have their opinion, everyone has a preference, mine is ball heads.

This is the exact tripod I bought from B&H last month. It has performed like a champ in its first few test runs. It easily handles all of the gear I have listed in my signature. The reason I went with this tripod is it does have the option to upgrade the head in the future if you find need for something more.
