Had one - if you bought into the Manfrotto RC2 system, get the version that supports that. The weight rating is only too true (and maybe a tad optimistic) as far as carrying the camera/lens around on the head. If you have a big lens (70-200 2.8 or larger) you're planning to use it with, the RRS head really is a better (in spite of the cost) choice. I had a 1D3/100-400 on my 234 with an A-S release clamp mounted to it - the A-S stayed firmly secure to the lens' tripod foot, but pivoted wildly on the 234. Before I went out again, I upgraded to the RRS MH-01, which I have the RRS LR-40 attached to. Doesn't budge when carried.

I do not have experience with that tilt head, but the 234RC fits my needs perfectly. I do not try to carry the body and lens attached to the monopod, unless it is just for a short distance. The quick release plate stays attached to the body or the lens mount and is a snap to remove and remount.

I have that head on a Manfrotto 679B monopod and use it with my 100-400 with no complaints. If I had it to do over again the only thing I'd do different is that I'd get one with an integrated arca-swiss clamp.

IMO - it good for getting your fingers pinched.

work without it for awhile and then decide if you really need/want it.

one of these (external link). very expensive, though.

RRS used to sell those Manfrotto monopod heads with their own RRS clamp. now, they make their own with a much higher weight rating.

I use that Manfrotto Tilt head on my monopods in a modified form. I removed the thumbscrew part and securely bolted a RRS Lever Quick Release Clamp on top to be compatible with my tripod since all my camera bodies have a RRS Arca-Swiss plate or L-Plate mounted to them. It works great for quick release of the camera from the pod-stick.

I don't carry the camera by the monopod, although I do carry the collapsed monopod by the camera occasionally. :) That tilt head is probably OK for your intended usage, and certainly beats trying to use a monopod without tilt capability.

You could also get this one (external link) made by Kirk. it's the Manfrotto 234 with their own anti-twist Arca-Swiss style clamp.

So how do you generally carry this combo?

I always have a firm grip on the camera and never put the monopod over my shoulder with the camera still on it as I have seen others do. My little collapsable carbon fiber monopod is easy to move while hanging from the camera, but I use the QR and unmount it if I am going any distance.

I see. I do put the monopod over my shoulder, but as I generally only use it with a long lens, the barrel of that lens will also be resting on my shoulder so there's no strain on the combo. I have always found this to be the fastest and most comfortable way to carry this configuration.

With shorter lenses, I find it easier to take the camera from the monopod and carry it by the neck strap while using the monopod as a walking stick.
