I stopped by a local downtown pond to check out the wildlife and was a witness to this unprovoked attack.

The unsuspecting victims

Then the action begins. As I see it the attack was unprovoked.

The battle begins as the swan is on top of the duck trying to drown it

Duck gets away for a bit, but swan catches him again

The duck continually tries to come up for air

The swan has the duck by the neck. You can see the ducks eyes and beek in the water.

As it turned out, a pedestrian on the shore was able to raise enough ruckus to distract the swan long enough for the duck to get away and go under a boat. I don't know if the duck found a safe place or drowned. I hung around for about another 10 minutes but did not see the duck. The swan just flew off, leaving his family behind.

Thanks Sramdon. I was shooting with my 7D and after getting home I thought, why didn't I video it? It would have been great in video. I have only used the video on the camera once just to try it out. Now, I am going to learn more about using it as you never know.

It may seem like an "unprovoked" attack but a swan will attack anything white as it assumes its another swan. Have seen this happen a lot, the poor ducks only crime is being white and getting a little too close to the signets.

Thanks Neil, I didn't know that. There were several regular mallard type ducks a lot closer than the white ducks which didn't seem to bother the swans. The white ducks were just sitting there in the weeds not bothering anyone. The swans were the ones moving in the water.

Egrets are white too and will kill cignets and eat them in a heartbeat. Nice series. Poor duck.
