So a few of the former military folks I know are wondering about action shots of themselves and their rifles. I have found it awfully difficult to search for this topic on the forums and was wondering about some good techniques for shooting shooters.

Tip: Position yourself behind them, not downrange. ;)

There is a photography forum over at www.ar15.com (external link) it's under the general tab. You may, or may not have more luck there.

You could also ask in General Discussion, but it can get a little wild in there sometimes. :D

Are you photographing them at a match, or just in an informal setting?

I've got some match photos posted here:

Most recent set was from Creedmoor Cup West 2009.

All I can say for photographing during a High Power match:

1. Don't use fill flash during live fire strings.

2. Use a telephoto lens, particularly during slow fire stages (i.e. standing) so you don't have to get too close within the competitor's peripheral vision if taking a side profile shot.

Wild is an understatement. Quite a few of the people there need to see a shrink.:D

There's really nothing different about shooting this type of subject except for following basic safety precautions. Wear eye and ear protection, stay behind the firing line, etc. If you want shots from the front, use a remote to trigger the camera.

Only suggestion is that using a flash to freeze motion can provide some great results.

Send an email to accounts@ar15.com (external link) and explain the situation.

I think someone would be able to help you out.
