Hi guys,

I am planning a series of shoots in LA in November, and I am currently scouting for locations. I am based in the UK so have little or no local knowledge. I would appreciate any suggestions for locations based on the following ideas:

- A run down industrial backdrop
- Sci-fi/film noir backdrops
- Post modern architecture which has lots of open space.
- any other suggestions you may have.

Thanks,

Rachel

I don't know if it's postmodern, but The Getty has interesting, modern architecture... Art Center College of Design looks like it might have something you want as well.

I would also add The Queen Mary to your list. Inside and on deck there are so many great shots to be had.

For Sci Fi, I'd recommend Disney Concert Hall, LA County Museum of Park area, Getty Center.

Post Modern also Getty Center.

Not sure about Industrial backdrop.

Getty Center does not allow commercial photography, so that may be an issued though.

Might not be what you had in mind, but I'd recommend taking a drive down the Pacific Coast Highway and stopping for a few shots at the pull-offs. The beach and cliffs are gorgeous, and the sunsets are amazing. Great ocean landscapes and scenery.

For the rundown, industrial backdrop I would recommend the city of Vernon (external link)and also Commerce. They are a short drive south of Downtown LA. Both of these cities are very industrial and are one of my favorite places to shoot because that also means there are very few people there on the weekends.

Just be careful if you decide to venture west of Vernon (west of Long Beach Ave.), especially at night. That area is fairly safe to drive through, but I wouldn't want to be walking around there too long.

Check out the month of March in my Project 365 (in my signature). I spent a lot of time in Vernon that month trying to capture some of that "run down and abandoned feel."
