I have watched a couple video's on setting white balance but still do not get one thing. i was hoping someone could help me. When you take the photo that you are going to be applying as the new white balance setting should you have the camera set to custom white balance already or should you have it set on Auto white balance?

Exact details can vary from camera to camera, so you really need to read your manual:)! Check the index for "custom white balance" or related issues in your "Advanced" chapter.

In general, you take a picture of a "target" in any WB setting, set it as your WB "reference" in the camera and then turn your WB setting to Custom White Balance.

Welcome to the forum! What camera are you using because that helps us answer your question.

I shoot in bad lighting conditions often, like school gyms or dark concert halls. From experience I can tell you that I set the temperature in the menu for custom white balance for the places I shot often. I know in the middle school gym, I need 3900, otherwise, all the kids look very sick. For outdoor soccer, I just go AWB and it's usually fine. So depending on where you are, and how often you shoot there, you can actually prepare beforehand what temperature you need to get it right before you PP. Procedure is I go to the hall, take a few pictures in RAW, then I get home and see how much I need to adjust the WB. The next time I shoot there, I set it beforehand, and it's worked for me.

Sorry...I misunderstood your question. When taking the photo you will later use as a WB Reference, set the camera's WB to the preset that most closely matches the lighting conditions.
