The Union Pacific main line still runs right down the street through Jack London Square in Oakland. It's a great place to get some good shots of both freight and passenger trains, and yesterday was a beautiful day for train watching.

This is the first time I have used photobucket, and it looks like I lost quite a bit of image quality when I resized these. These were all taken in RAW with a 5D2 and the originals are no where near this grainy looking. I will have to figure out what I did wrong before I try this again.

Good series! As for PB, it could be that PhotoBucket has resized? From their support:

Before uploading your images to your Photobucket account, choose either a
display or file size that is equal to or larger than that of your images. You
can do this by clicking on the 'Uploading Options' link in your upload panel
and then on the radio button next to your preferred size. If an option is
grayed out, this means the option is not available for your Photobucket
account type. Selecting a size larger than your images will prevent further
resizing upon upload and help expedite the upload process. To make the changes
permanent, you must upload at least one image from the upload panel. This is
important for Pro users using FTP or anyone using the Windows XP Publisher. If
you choose to use the file size options, the file size of the original image
will take precedence over the the display size and any display size is
accepted as long as the file size is less than your choice in the 'Uploading
Options'.

I always click on the image to get the 100% size that I've uploaded, & then use that URL for display.

Nice series....Pbucket has a reputation for really messing with image quality unless you do some little trick. I suspect that the advice Frank has shared is the key to getting the best out of shots uploaded there.

Thanks for the tips guys, and the compliments! I will check those upload options the next time I upload. If anyone is interested, the originals look much nicer in my trains set on Flickr.

Why don't you link them from Flickr then?

I live two blocks from where you took many of these shots.

We hear all the train whistles/horns (since they have to signal frequently wherever they share a ROW with vehicles along Embarcadero).

The WP tracks used to run down our street until about 15-20 years ago, and the WP depot was right across the street from us in the heyday.

Originally I thought photobucket would be easier...go figure! Here is another from the same area of a cab car heading the train down the street.

Linking to Flickr seems to be much nicer, thanks again. I will get all this stuff down someday!

avwh, I hear them all day too, as I work in the federal building a few blocks away! I sure wish I had a camera back when the WP was still operating; their old ferry dock location to SF is now in a park that has great shooting opportunities of it's own.

Nice I very much like 2 and 4. No.2 being a big favorite, I like the clean composition, many leading lines and very pleasing color contrast.

In my humble, non-professional opinion. I would contact Amtrak and submit that as an advertising photo for them. Seeing as how you took it in RAW.
