Hi. I have a 5d mkii, 580EX2 and a 420EX which I only just received. I can master the 580EX2 on the hotshoe and slave the 420 but when I connect the 580EX2 via a sync cord I cant fire the 420... is this corrector am I doing something wrong?
And what flash do I need in order to achieve this if the 420 will not comply.
Thank yoiu

First, welcome to the forum!
As far as using the 580 off-camera as a master, a Canon-compatible ETTL cord will allow full functionality (including allowing the 580 to function in master mode). If your sync cord is just a trigger-sync, it will not work. You can get a very good ETTL cord from Flash Zebra.

Canon disables the 580EXII's PC port when it is in Master and Manual modes.

A hybrid triggering can be done by connecting a PC-sync cord to an adapter foot. A radio trigger can also be used. The 580EXII is placed on the adapter and set to Master and Manual.

A Speedlite slave can then be set manually. It is fired by Canon Wireless.

But, I think that the 420EX cannot be set manually.

The hybrid triggering does not use ETTL.

I think he means what he says. That is what i have been trying to explain to you in the other thread. When the 580ex is in master mode it can also be switched between eTTL and manual modes. Two different options selected in two different menus.

Hold down the Zoom button for a few seconds then flashing OFF will appear. Turn the wheel to get to master or slave. Press middle button to accept. Change you modes - ETTL, Manual, Multi as usual.
