While numbers say USB 2 is faster than FireWire, those numbers are only good for a certain peak during data transfer and FireWire is definitely faster on average.

And FireWire 800 is faster than FireWire 400. Your iMac has a FireWire 800 port.

If your firewire card reader isn't working it must be that it's a firewire 400, not 800. Either get a new firewire 800 reader, or use usb.

Well the FireWire 400 and FireWire 800 (external link) plugs aren't the same size.

But FW 400 to FW 800 adapters (external link) do exist.

FYI: I got an iMac a couple of weeks ago and had not used one since the first Mac in 84. Someone recommended the book "Switching to the Mac the missing manual" it's been a tremendous help in understanding this awesome machine. Not that this has anything to do with CF readers.

You can get Firewire 400 - 800 adapter cables cheap at MonoPrice:

No need to get a new reader, the one you have should work fine.

I have the Sandisk Extreme Firewire Reader as well and it fits fine in my Mac Pro. Use the firewire 800 cable not the firewire 400 cable. The reader comes with 2 cables for either 400 or 800 connectivity.
