i want to buy a wide angle lens for landscapes, city shots and crowd portraits.

i am not a huge fan of the fisheye look but i understand that defishing can be done in pp.

what are the pros and cons of fisheye lenses vs ultra wide angle lenses.

(target body is 5dmk2 in case it matters).

From what I hear the 16-35 L II handles distortion very well. If you get a fisheye lens I would recommend that you get it for the effect that it makes and not with the intention of repairing every image.
You can remove the distortion but there is a cost. You will lose a lot of your image when you correct it unless there is a different way I do not know about. If your budget is lower that the 16-35 the 17-40mm is very nice also and wide on a FF.

I never, Not once claimed to read your post...

thanks.

the 16-35 is out of budget (unfortunately). i think the choice is quite limited in FF - looking at the 17-40 or sigma 12-24 for uwa.

Unless you WANT a fisheye ;)

Rectilinear and Fisheye are two different ways of handling extremely wide field-of-views. One is not "better" than the other.

i've taken lots of what i think are good shots with my fisheye and not felt the need to correct distortion

I also have the 16-35LII but am finding the 15mm fisheye much more fun.

it does landscapes...

5Damien, those are very nice shots. Can I ask what makes the horizon straight in some and curve in others? Is there some technique to framing the shot to get this?

I've actually had that happen before when I did my usual "Try googling <subject>" suggestion...

And I don't do it to be obnoxious, I do it because sometimes folks don't know the right search terms to use. In this situation, I didn't see anyone mention "rectilinear", so I figured googling that term (along with Fisheye) would lead to some good stuff.

I like my rectilinear Sigma 10-20, but I've seen some cool stuff from the Tokina 10-17, which is unusual in that it's actually a "Fisheye ZOOM" lens.

yes its simple... if a straight line goes through the centre of the frame it will stay straight, the further it is from the centre it curves more.
