I've subscribed the following photo at a contest that doesn't have a fixed theme or subject. In other words, you can subscribe anything you want, the only catch is that the photo has to be shot with a canon... The problem is I started having second thoughts about the picture posted. I'm now thinking that I could have posted or done a better picture... Please tell me what do you think about the photo! Do I stand any chance...? :) Thanks very much!
P.S: Oh, and by the way, the photo is called "Junky". Thanks!

IMO, the stairs, the railing, the ashtray, and the clothes just make the photo too busy and distracting. maybe if you put the chair in an area where there was just the wall with nothing else distracting from the subjects. What's the blue light on the guy's left leg? that's a little distracting as well. Also, i'm not too fond of the pose. if it's called "junky", how about just the Junky in the photo? I don't see the purpose of him sitting on the girl. Sorry if I'm kind of harsh . . . I'm just giving my opinion. Keep trying and I hope you come up with a winning shot!

I think you have a lot of things right with this picture but agree with Mark that it's a little too busy with unnessecary details. Also, I can see from his pose that he's meant to be a junky, but nothing else reinforces it.

As for your chances, I guess that depends on what everyone else submits ;)

Good luck and let us know how you get on.

I used the kit lens on the 350D, the 18-55, at the wide end (18 mm that is)...
I guess you're right Big_B, in the end it depends on what everybody else is submitting...
Thanks for all the comments!

FYI

junkie = a drug addict

junky = old, worn out, trashy

Oh, and the photo . . . . I'm with the majority on that one. Kinda weak on impact and busy.

A B&W of a dirty, sunken-faced, hollow-eyed ratty-haired person, laying in a pile of trash in an alley, a well-work hype in their hand, eyes staring blankly through the camera, would evoke a real sense the life of a junkie.

I think it's a rather blah image.

if youre working with that one photo, i'd make it either:
1. b/w, with sharp contrast and rotate the picture
or
2. make some colors pop out more and add some motion blur, to give it a drunk/high feel.

both could accentuate the tired/drug and party scene look, which is what i got out of the photo.

A560 will have to do... for now

add a insulin needle and some rubber around his arm for a more "in your face" photo that will stir people up.
politically uncorrect photos are rememberable, but not always winners.

I am no pro by any means, but I do see a lot of this just from being in school... I agree that the jens should be a bit more ratty as well as the shirt, and I like the idea of the needle, or maybe a joint (or something that looks like it) in one hand, and maybe a bottle of alcohol since those tend to go hand in hand.... I am no expert, but that would make it more realistic of the atmosphere that I see...

btw, I am majoring in parks and recreation management. This major is known for it's hippies and junkies
