I've spotted a EF 300mm f2.8 L IS USM lens for sale, however the seller states that there are a few dust spec inside the lens.

Although these are unlikely to show up in images, can the lens be professionally cleaned (CPS I'm guessing) and if so whats sort of costs are likely to be involved.

Many thanks in advance

The vast majority of dust specks will generally not affect image quality in a noticeable way, as you say; Canon can clean lenses if you're concerned. Give your local service department a call.

Yes, lenses can be cleaned. Canon usually charges a flat rate to do it, and it would likely cost under $200 USD. That being said, I wouldn't bother. The dust will not impact image quality at all, and eventually the dust will come back.

I'm gonna go for the lens so I'll let you know how I get on.

Either take it to Elstree and they have a look and give you a quote over the counter.

I think Canon have a fixed service charge for the 300 2.8 IS.

I think its something in the region of £185 +vat or there abouts!

If there are only dust particles inside, they never show up on the images. I don't know what's a big deal that people are making out of this. Save your money on cleaning that. If they already have dust particles inside, there will be more with time.
Don't send it to canon, and just start shooting
