Another satisfied 622c customer here. They have been great at letting me get the flash anywhere I want.

I have the 603 set and it works great in terms of remote triggering off-camera flash, etc, but all on manual.
Do you guys who use the 622s take advantage of the TTL function and set the flash via the camera? How well does that work?

It works decently but ettl can be inconsistent shot to shot. I like it for in camera settings changes for manual flash.

I see. So you don't really use it as TTL. You just use it to change flash settings without having to walk to the flash?

For the most part, but I have used ettl on occasion. Set it in an umbrella in the corner of a room, shooting up into the corner to add fill.

Allowed me to change settings on the fly and keep flash off camera

I may order a set of 622 for Christmas. Putting together my Christmas list at the moment.

- New tripod.
- 622 set.
- I'd like some real lighting setup (I have a speedlite, but no stands or umbrellas or softboxes to really use it with. Any suggestions?)
- Finally, I'd like to get started with ND and GND filters. Still weighing my options/budget for the Lee stuff.

Dean, I only occasionally use the 622's for ETTL. I am a lot more comfortable with manual and the 622's let me make changes from the camera menu, which is great when the flash is across the room.
As far as recommendations on modifiers, I went cheap as I want to make sure I can get the hang of the use of modifiers. So far, I only have a couple of different size umbrella's and a light stand to work with. But I have put a softbox, a reflecting umbrella and a couple of additional light stands on my christmas list from the wife and kids. Hopefully I get some more toys for the holidays to play with.
It really makes a huge difference in the quality of light. Going OCF was a bit of a jump, but adding modifiers to the OCF made a huge jump again.
Still learning along the way, but it is fun for sure. If you want cheap to check it out, check out Cowboy Studios site on Amazon. They have cheap gear, and it is cheap for a reason, but at least you can try stuff out without a huge money commitment.

Thanks for the info. Problem is I'm not really sure where to even start. And would these various pieces fit together?
For example, if I get an umbrella and/or a softbox from Cowboy Studios. Will it mount my YN speedlite? Are these mostly standard mounts, or will I need adapters and the such to make it all fit together?

I bought an umbrella kit that included a 33" shoot through umbrella, a 7 foot light stand and a bracket (there were like 3-4 different kinds of brackets based on how you wanted to control the movement). The kit was like $40. It worked just fine for my yn 565 with yn 622c attached.
Something like this is what I got

I might get something like that. Question: How would you fit a softbox around that stand/bracket with your yn565? (Assuming I want to use a softbox and not the umbrella). Have you tried that?
Having never had a softbox, I am not entirely sure how they mount when using a speedlite like the YN (as opposed to a regular strobe).

the hotshoe mounts for flashes is almost a universal things these days... the 622 are awesome i have 4 i used with my 3 flashes and as sirquak mentioned once you have the 622 its so much easier useing them in manual as ettl doesnt always allow the precise control you can get with manual mode... and the best part is you can use your built in flash control on your camera to control the flashes... just get yourself a cheap westcott or cowboy studio umrella and/or softbox.. the 32in octo box is cheap and nice softbox... then play around and if you like using flash invest from there

most softbox that are made for a speedlite will have a bracket for it to mount on that adjustable so if you throw a 622 on there it will still work
