So a bottle of residual oil remover (ROR) spilled in my bag, soaking my TC-80N3 for an unknown period of time. I don't keep a battery in the remote, so I thought it would be fine to dry (oven @ 60ºC for 24hrs) and install the battery. It doesn't work unfortunately.

Would soaking the remote in deionized, distilled water and then re-drying the remote even have the possibility of working? I guess there is no harm trying, but if anyone has any other remedies... and I cannot find any ingredients on the ROR bottle, so I'm not exactly sure what may have gone into the remote. I'm guessing some alcohol type liquids, because my bag and the remote sure smell like it!

If you ever need to find the ingredients of something then the MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) is a good place to look. RoR is -

  • Ammonia 26° 0.775%
  • Sodium Chloride 0.830%
  • Isopropyl Alcohol 4.266%
  • Liquid Soap 9.011%
  • Distilled Water 85.118%

That NaCl isn't going to do the insides much good. A wash in distillled water might fix it, but I suspect you've already got corroded innards:(

I've never come across this stuff, but I bet they charge a fortune for what is, in effect, soapy water.

Thanks Frank, I didn't see the MSDS on their webpage but I found it now. I'm probably going to be out of luck, but I might try the DDW soak anyways.
