When I re-entered wedding photography, it was my intention to go full frame - mostly I guess because I am an older guy used to medium format for weddings.

Anyway, I bought a pair of 40D's s/h and a new 24-70 and a new 70-200 ready for when I stepped up to full frame. As per the title the 5d11 was my target.

However, I now realise I would only upgrade to FF for the better high ISO capabilities. I believe I could live with the focussing but the 5D2 body I borrowed was only giving a low flash sync and out here in the REALLY bright sunshine at/or near midday (YUK!) sync speed is important to me.

Result, I may look at a secondhand 1dMk3 or stay as I am for a while longer (roll on 5Dmk3!) - feeling sort of dissapointed:cry:... hence the post.

5D2 is the most popular Canon wedding body by far and for reasons besides good high ISO performance.

Set your flash to highspeed sync and you can take pictures at 1/8000 sek.

The 40D is only 1/250s.

so heres the thing about mid-day sun photos... The 5dII has a sync speed varying between 1/160-1/200 of a second depending on the situation, That being said, lets talk here for a second:

IMAGE: http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4052/4638023410_f069307a0f_b.jpg
5d Mark II, f/4.5 | 1/320 s | ISO 50 this was not high speed sync, as its a Quantum T5d being triggered by a pocketwizard... the light still hit the upper regions of the photograph, and I didnt get the black bar of death because it was bright outside

IMAGE: http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4039/4673879232_a9807e6106_b.jpg

Now for this one, we have a 5d II, at ƒ16, and 1/200 of a second, ISO 50 with a 430 being held by a VAL at full power... thats not even a 580 and it had no problem doing this...

here is another shot taken at 320's of a second, this time with NO ambient light, not I just worked the Black Bar into my composition (This is not the final product)

Using Profoto lights here, triggered by Pocketwizard Plus II's... I could not achieve the 1/200's of a second with these lights, so I shot it at ƒ14 | 1/160 | ISO 125

Was just Illustrating to the thread starter that the 5d II's "Low" sync speed is not a problem, all of my work involves off camera flash (truthfully im wondering if I can do Natural Light anymore!), and Im proud of what this camera can do, so just trying to show G... that his concerns are misguided, and that he wont have a problem at all with the 5d Mark II for his work.

Im editing them now to just be links now rather then actual photos in the thread.... didnt mean to come off that way Robert

Beysler, leave therm there, this is not the photo sharing section, it's the EOS section where example photos to make ones point about the equipment we talk about, and it's use, are welcome.

The notion of not wanting a 5DMKII is every reason to post a bunch of pics proving otherwise.
Just by my observations of this forum .... & others, the best low light DSLR pictures have been captured with the 5DMKII.

Post away I say.

I would go with the 1D III if you can afford it... My old 1D classic has a sync speed of 1/500,,, I have no idea what the Mark III does.

The improved IQ and high iso performance I got from going from the 40D to the 5D is such that I cant imagine keeping a 40D over a 5DII. The sync speed isnt that much of an issue to me to give up the IQ improvement, especially for wedding work where HSS can be applied.

the other guys hit it right on the head - I almost never shoot without flash and the 5DII can synch up to 8000th of a second with Canon Speedlites - you can get up to 500th or better with the new pocketwizards with most other traditional strobes which is pretty fast if you are shooting at f/8 or 11
