i realize this is the only forum that there arent many daredevil DIYers that are willing to 'explore' their gears and come up with some kind of hack/modifications to their camera/lens. people are so afraid of warranty issue or bricking their gears. i do realize it is a lot of money to be tinkering about, but on other forums i participate in like cars, motorcycle, and computer/laptop forums, their stuff cost more if not as much as camera gears and yet they are willing to explore the guts and come up with some kind of mods to make it more useful/unique.

i did however read up on a couple of POTN daredevils that have hacked different lens mount to make work with their camera. only a small amount of firmware hacks available. handful of lens maintenance.

cameras are nothing more of just electronics with typical screws and tabs holding together. no difference than a computer or a vehicle. everything and anything can be just as fragile as one another. firmwares are nothing more than just coding/softwares. i know nothing about coding, so i may be wrong. the only problem with lens is that i have heard they might fill up with nitrogen to keep glass from fogging up? i may also be wrong, someone told me that.

i am one of those gutsy ones that are willing to explore and open things up and try new mods. i do see the DIY sticky, but they are mainly for strobist/flash.

is it possible to get a sticky of all the posts documenting some kind of DIY modification/hacking together? of course anyone following any guides are at their own risk and the author of the post should not be at fault.

i hope people arent taking this thread the wrong way, i am definitely not dogging down the people on this forum. i am just curious to know why so little mods/hack has been done with cameras for being such a big community. i know there are a lot of smart and handy people on this forum.

i appreciate everyone and anyone that have contributed to this forum. without you guys, this community would not be as big and resourceful. :D

No offense intended, but I don't pay thousands of dollars for equipment only to screw it up like a high school prankster trying to turn it into something it isn't.

A lot of people on here use these as tools in their business that puts food on the table. It isn't exactly smart to start messing with your kids next meal for entertainment purposes.

Because somepeople on here make money with photography and don't want to screw up their cameras, which is their tool for putting food on the table. Cameras are also pretty complex, you don't want to go around messing up AF or metering.

In terms of mods you can do an IR conversion or remove your AA filter.

I tend to buy the gear that will get the job done to begin with. But knock yourself out if you get a kick out of fitting that EF-S mount lens to an EF mount only camera.

However I will say some type of cowboy 5d shooting 8fps would be cool.

Someone should get on that.

My camera works fine as it is thanks. Don't see why I should risk making it FUBAR out of curiosity, or thinking that I can do a better job of it than Mr. Canon.

I disagree, cameras are actually pretty simple by today's standards, however, I totally agree with the second part of your statement. It's hard enough to get a brand new camera to work perfectly. With three separate optical paths the odds of you improving something is minuscule but the odds of you screwing something up is near 100%.

Plus, what do you want it to do that it doesn't already do? Mods to cars make sense as your improving performance/looks and mods to PC make sense as your doing the same. But what mod are you going to do? Replace the processor with a i7? Improve buffer speed? Shave down the mirror making it lighter so that you can get better than 10fps? There just isn't that much to do.

Did you see the Rebel firmware hack sticky?

https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=742806

What other hacks besides firmware, shaved mirrors, and other minor physical changes would you be interested in?

completely understand everyone's point, but what is the ratio from professional photographers vs hobbyist?

you're right, a camera is just to take pics, what more does it need, but what if you can make it more efficient for your business/work?

for instance, EF-S mount lens on EF only bodies. maybe some kind of firmware hack to reassign some buttons, make the menu more intuitive on some cameras, incorporate the 1 series focus point selections to the xxD or xxxD system. live views to have recording.

i dont know..just my thought.

im not saying you sure tinker your gears to 'FUBAR'.

The mac jailbreak/hack community always comes up with ways to make things more unique and useful. who is to say they are 'smarter' than Mr. Canon or Mr Steve Jobs. my jailbroken iphone works 100% and more intuitive than a stock iphone. this is my example.

im just saying if any possibilities to make things 'better'. i know everyone is always wanting to know about shutter counts, would it be possible to write something and intergrated to the camera to count all the clicks its been done? afterall, it is digital, created by computer software.

open source stuff like the magic lantern would be pretty cool if it can be available for all cameras.

yea that is awesome, not everything has to be about modifications.

maintenance is always a must. just like your car needs to meet maintenance schedule. i never bring my car into the dealer or any shop for that, i can do it all on my own.

maybe some people can document step by step on how its done and write out a disclaimer so no one gets in trouble.

here is one i wrote out:
