In March and April I conducted several photography workshops where one of the featured subjects was the endangered Snail Kite. Snail Kites are often attacked by smaller birds like Red-winged Black Birds and Grackles as they go about their daily routines. What follows are a few of the hundreds of photos I made of this behavior while shooting this season's nesting Snail Kite colony. This type of shot is particularly difficult to get becuase you have two moving subjects. In addition to the light, distance, timing, focus, etc. all coming together at the same moment, you need to have two birds with decent head and wing positions and close enough to each other to achive focus on both subjects.

Great series Jim! Those little RWBB's have big cajones going after the bigger birds, especially the predator types! I've seen them doing this at the pond by my house but nothing quite so spectacular.

These are spectacular! What f-stop were you using for these - I always struggle between the necessary shutter speed, DOF and trying to avoid noise.

Jim, these are stunning images! I love this action. Here at the canyon the Blackbirds are chasing the Ravens. Too far for me to get a good shot. I love your work!

I was just going to say the same thing...you would need some serious DOF to get both birds. I usually have trouble focusing on one moving object let alone two.

Incredible, Jim. Never knew those RWBBs were that ballsy.

If you're going to do a BIF workshop, go to Jim.

Jim were you using center point on this group?
