My current tripod is about 30 years old and starting to wear out, so I'm looking for a replacement. Found one at Best Buy over the weekend but not sure if it will hold my 40D and 24-105 lens combo.

What to you folks think about that one or should I be looking for something bigger? Like the idea of the pistol grip but do they work as easy as the ads say they do?

Thanks,
Craig

I would not buy the Sunpak. Read some reviews here a while back that were not good. Sorry, can't recall the details. For less money you can get the Manfrotto 190xb with ballhead at B&H. It should do fine with your set up. I had the exact camera and lens on a Manfrotto 190XB for about a year. I did have a slightly bigger Manfrotto ballhead at the time. There is a great review here on this set up as well. Very nice tripod for the money. The price (and quality) go up from this set up, and I would consider this the starting point for a quality tripod. Any particular issues with you? Meaning, do you need something lighter, something you may hike with, etc.. Do you shoot macro? Anything like that would influence this suggestion.

Below is the recent review of the 190...

190xprob would be better for macro as the center column goes horizontal. Slick feature...

Here is the same with the pistol grip. I had one and gave it away for what it is worth to you. I prefer ballheads I find.

Then there are the carbon fiber versions as well. However, once you get into this price range, there are far more options for high quality tripods. Meaning even more research should be done...

In nearly the same fashion, the Manfrotto 055 is available. It is simply a beefier version of the 190 series. I have the 055xprob and it is very good, but quite heavy and bulky. This would be considered a more stable tripod however and I felt that it was worth mentioning. Especially if you don't mind the extra weight/bulk.

Looks like I need to put a bit more money into a new tripod. Well if the next one last for 30 years, guess I'll get my money worth.:)

So does anyone have anythnig to to say good or bad about using ball heads with a pistol style grip?

They ware out way to fast and found them prone to breaking. A regular ball head works just as well. so you spin a knob to lock it.

Matt.
