What is your perfect tripod for your T2i/T1i with an average heavy glass (e.g. 50 1.4). Ideally I would like something that can be moved around and strapped to a a backpack, too...

Discuss,
Ralf

Start here...

You can get the Manfrotto 190xb with ballhead at B&H for around $150. There is a great review here on this set up as well. Very nice tripod for the money. The price (and quality) go up from this set up, and I would consider this the starting point for a quality tripod.

Below is the recent review of the 190...

$150 with mail in rebate if you use Visa card...

190xprob would be better for macro as the center column goes horizontal. Slick feature...

Then there are the carbon fiber versions as well. However, once you get into this price range, there are far more options for high quality tripods. Meaning even more research should be done...

In nearly the same fashion, the Manfrotto 055 is available. It is simply a beefier version of the 190 series. I have the 055xprob and it is very good, but quite heavy and bulky. This would be considered a more stable tripod however and I felt that it was worth mentioning. Especially if you don't mind the extra weight/bulk.

It's actually $25 rebate. ;) $50 is for carbon fiber tripods.

bolded part = LAWL, I'd say get a tripod you can grow with for a while, so a T2i + 70-200 f2.8 IS weight is what I'd go for

let me ask you this... what is "portability" worth to you? hahaha...

Feisol is very nice for the price... it's prolly my next buy... for something a bit more rigid...

Benro has nice and compact models for $300-400 range

Gitzo will make your wallet cry... especially the 1550T... lol...

...

I just bought a Benro ballhead (B 3)...

I wasn't aware of their stuff until it was recommended to me by the store owner where I had a credit ..... He told me that dollar for dollar is couldn't be beat. This store carries a HUGE selection of tripods and heads. I had a credit there so before making a decision I went home and looked at reviews. I really didn't plan on spending $200 on a ball head, but the reviews on the Benro stuff (and on on that specific ball head) were great. I went back the next day and got it..They had a Manfrotto ballhead for the exact same price that looked very cool (off-set head). But holding them both in my hands the Benro made the $200 Manfrotto feel a bit like a toy, plus the controls were more suited for studio work...very slow and precise....good for some purposes, but slow for using in the field.

The Benro also came with an Arca Swiss compatible QR...The Manfrotto had a QR for a medium format body - I needed something I could use on a lens foot, so that was another factor for me.

It seemed like the Benro stuff was about half the price when compared to the Italian or American brands..It's made in China, but it is very nicely made stuff.

Doesn't have the "prestige" of a Manfrotto/Bogen or Gitzmo, etc...but I was not interested in prestige..I was interested in value, and the Benro stuff seemed to shine in that department.

Peace,
D.

Wow, what a nice picture! You must have a really great camera!

The Feisol is rock solid. I got one recently for travel. My model (in my sig) has no center column yet gets my view finder 60" from the ground. This makes for a far more stable set up than most all other travel tripods that require a center column. Also, not having a center column means it goes all the way to the ground for macro, another consideration I had. This is a fantastic tripod weighing 2.3 lbs and 18" long when folded.

yep... just from reading about the feisols... i'm so tempted...

but my 100-400 or other choice of long zooms comes first...

see... even my wimpy gitzo 1550T does the 7D+70-200 2.8 well for my kids... hahaha

What do you think of Manfrotto 7322YB for travel?

at 19" and 2.4lbs it's not bad... the only thing that concerned me on this tripod is the load being 4.4 lbs...

my 7D + 70-200 comes at ~6lbs (includinig the Photoclam PC30N)...
but if you're just using a T2i and some lens... i guess it's ok... but i'd feel more comfy with a bit more headroom...

i guess one other factor that made me walk past this specific model from Manfrotto is that every floor sample i've seen had a broken something... of course, floor models gets bastardized but still...
