Looks like an interesting idea but how good is it in the field?

I have one for my 400 2.8.
Works great. It stretches to install and fits fine.
The only downside is it doesnt offer any front element protection other than dust/rain.

I've been using the Lenscoat versions. They have a rigid disc in the end-cap and I like them so much better than the plastic lens caps but when you take them off to shoot, it's quite a bulky thing to put somewhere. If you're a girl, tucking it in your bra strap will make you look very odd :)

On the other hand, it's hard to lose them because they're so big. Despite this, I have managed to lose my camouflage one when I dropped it. It flopped and rolled down a hill into dense undergrowth and the color of it thwarted all attempts to find it!

I'm actually interested in getting an Optech one and cutting the center circle out to make a permanent hood protector as this would be quite useful to me.
Do you think this would work or would the shape lose its integrity and not stay on the hood if I cut out the center?

I love the optech. I hate the Lenscoat. I use the optech all the time. Great product, but it is not necessarily for protection for the lens, just from the elements while shooting.

The Tamron 14mm f2.8 has a built-in hood that isn't removable. The "lens cap" that comes with it is vinyl with a rigid disc and a drawstring closure. It's very fiddly to work with in the field and I looked around for quite a while until I found the Optech Hood hat. It was the perfect solution.
