Well can they?

I thought If i buy a good head ball thing, can I uese it both a monpod and a tripod- interchangable.

Reason is I might just start with buying a Monopod and use that for a while then promote myself to a tripod when I think I know more about how to use this damned camera of mine.

I know Manfrotto ones do, as do most Quality tripod / monopod manufactures

Yep....

I'd recommend the Bogen 486RC2 - a good ballhead with a really decent price tag. It also has a quick release feature that lets you put a quick-release plate on the camera (and leave it there) and from the on very quickly attach or release it to/from the ballhead.

I've found that the quick release is really important on a Monopod so you don't have to unscrew it all of the time. Moving around between pictures seems to be much easier if you are holding your camera in one hand and the monopod in the other.

I have a Gitzo monopod with a 486RC2 ball head; great combo. My tripod takes the same plate, so switching between monopod and tripod is quick and easy.
